BOB WILSON
By David Emslie
CLINTON - After acting as vice-president
and 'partner in the firm of Ball -Macaulay
Limited for over 20 years, Bob -Wilson
recently bought out the remaining shares to
become sole owner.
Mr. Wilson' has been with the company
since May of 1966. He explained how he
started out with Ball -Macaulay. "I heard
Bill (Ball) wanted to retire, and I had an in-
terview with Bill and Royce (Macaulay)
and that's where it all started. At that time I
was manager of a Beaver Lumber branch in
St. Marys."
He added that the initial reason, for mak-
ing the move was because he was interested
in owning his own businesss. To this end he
started buying Mr. Ball's shares while Mr.
Macaulay remained active in the business.
"The years went along, and we sold the
Seaforth store at the end of 1983; that's when
I came to Clinton. Royce was semi -retired
then," Mr. Wilson said.
Although he bought up many shares, until
recently Mr. Ball's wife Francis still had
some remaining shares, as did Mr.
Macaulay's wife Clara. Although they were
not involved in running the store, they had
financial interests, but on December 23 of
1986 the money changed hands and Mr.
Wilson became the sole owner.
Over the years, Mr. Wilson has noticed
many changes in the business. The first he
mentioned was during the le 1970s and
early 1980s when interest rats were very
high and people stopped buying goods.
• "A lot of people got hurt. A lot of people in
the industry then are not in it now," he said.
"There are good times and bad times; now
is a good time."
Different goods being marketed and sold
was the other change Mr. Wilson discussed.
He said that while the basics are still there,
such as lumber, nails, shingles and plywood,
other goods constantly change.
"A fellow told me a number of years ago
that 25 or 30 per cent of things you're going
to sell five years from now are not on the
market yet," he said. "That's true to an ex-
tent, a percentage of the products change.
Manufactured things and styles change, you
always have to stay on top, you have to be
alert of changes."
Although he is now the sole owner of the
business, he said that no changes are plann-
ed for the immediate future. Even the name
will stay the same, he explained, since it has
been the same for 35 years and people
recognize it.
"I don't care about the name of the store,
as long as people keep coming in," he said
laughing.
