Clinton News-Record, 1987-02-04, Page 14• Page 14—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1987 Optimist tournament Anyone looking for some entertainment this weekend might like to drop in at the Clinton Arena. It sounds like things could be hopping over there with the Optimist Ball Hockey Tournament in progress. The action will kick off on Friday night at 7:30 when the Clinton Warriors meet the Junior Farmers from Edgmondv.ille. The Optimists have been planning the tournament since December, so hopefully it should prove to be a good one. The caliber of play should also be high since all of the teams involved are from different ball hockey leagues. Included in the play will be 16 men's teams and 12 women's. The teams will come from Egmondville, Auburn, Brussels, Blyth, Dublin, Elora, Teeswater, Seaforth, Belgrave and, of course, Clinton. According to one of the Optimists involv- ed in the organization of the tournament, Jeff Gautreau, this tournament is one of the best money makers for the club. In past years this tournament has proven itself to be a success. Hopefully this fourth annual tournament will live up to its reputation. The action will run steadily from 7:30 p.m. on Friday until 1 a.m. It will pick up again on Satur- day at 12:30 p.m. and run until 1:30 that night. Sunday's activities will run from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Those that pay the $1 entrance fee won't have to worry about freezing in the arena either. The bar will be open upstairs on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon. The Optimists are trying something a lit- tle bit different for this year's tournament in the form of a dance on Saturday night. They are hoping that the D.J. music of "Sound Trek" will keep the people around a bit longer. The ball players will be admitted into the dance for free while the general public will be charged a nominal $2 fee. It will run from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Once again, if you're looking for some fun and sport this, weekend, drop over to the arena and give the Optimists your sup- port. It could be a good time. Cold turkey They said it couldn't be done. I guess it's a good thing I don't listen to everything they say. Anyone who may have read my New Year's column will know that I set my sights on giving up on cigarettes using the method of will power. I'm glad to report that my will power has held out, and I think I've got the habit kicked. It's been a lot easier than I thought it would be, but maybe the hard part is still to come. Hopefully ( and doubtfully) not. On the other side of the coin, I also men- tioned getting into great shape to combat the nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Unfortunately, I haven't totally lived up to this part of the bargain, but I'm giving myself until Frisbee season starts to get into shape. I'll get back to you on that. - Mustang draw The winner of the Clinton Junior "D" Mustang booster draw of $100 for the month of January was Mrs. Robert Govenlock.
