I can think of a lot of names for Sunday's National Football League championship game, but super is definitely not one of them. All those critics of the Canadian Football League that claim the CFL is so boring should be forced to watch reruns of this year's Super Bowl for a fete days straight. Now, I'll admit I might be a touch bitter since I once again, against my better judgement, tried to guess the outcome of the game and was off by a mile. I had such confidence this time I even made a small wager. What a mistake. So what. So I thought the Denver Bron- cos could come within at least nine points of the New York or. New Jersey (or whatever) Giants. Nine points seemed pretty safe, but boy was I wrong. Again, I don't think my loss has any real bearing on how boring I thought the game was. The first half was good, exciting football. The closer the game, the better. The Bron- cos should have been leading by at least seven points by the end of this half instead of the tiny 10-9 lead they held, but it was still exciting ball. Then the second half had to go and start. Actually, the boredom may have set in even before the half started with the dou- ble length half time show the Americans seem to love. But, back to the game. I doubt even the most die-hard NFL fan could consider such a one-sided second half exciting. In the third quarter alone the Giants gained 163 yards compared to the grand total of two the Broncos gained. Along the way the Giants managed to run up 17 points to give them a 33-10 lead since the Broncos couldn't move the ball. Perhaps saying the Broncos were unable to move the ball is an understatement. They couldn't even get a first down and were forced to punt on two occasions while giving the ball away on an interception on the other. The Giants couldn't seem to do any wrong for that second half, and luck was even on their side. Take for example the touchdown pass Giant quarterback Phil - Simms through to Phil McConkey. He didn't' actually throw the ball directly to McConkey as it first bounced off the helmet.of Mark Bavaro and into Mc- Conke's hands. Definitely what you would call a lucky bounce. Now compared to the CFL's big game of the year, the Grey Cup, this game was a real sleeper. Yes, the Grey Cup was equally or perhaps even more one sided, but at least it was the underdog that had the advan- tage. I'm sure if the Broncos had walked all over the Giants I probably wouldn't be complaining, or at least not as much. One final point on the subject. Where do they get off calling the Super Bowl a world championship game. I don't seem to remember these American teams playing any games against teams from other coun- tries, so how can it possibly be a "world championship?" Mustangs Clinton's Junior "D" Mustangs battled to a 6-6 tie with Seaforth last Tuesday. The Mustangs led 3-1 by the end 'of the first period and 5-3 by the end of the se- cond, but they ended up having to pull their goalie to get the tie at the end of the third period. Randy Marriage had a good game for the local team, scoring twice in the first period, as well as netting the tying goal at the end. Also scoring for Clinton were Wayne Smith, Scott Gilders and Mark Clausius. Athletic Support I'm happy to note that I saw two good ex- amples of strong support for Clinton athletics in the past week. First there is the case of the overwhelm- ing response to the sports survey that ran in the paper a few weeks back. I wasn't sure how the idea of a sports club would go over, but I hoped there would be a lot of responses to the survey to give the Garons an indication of how everyone felt. Fortunately things went so well we may soon have a club. I can't wait for the grand opening. The other place I saw great support for local athletes was at Central Huron Secon- dary School. I complained earlier in the year, during football season, that CHSS teams were get- ting no support from their fans. Well, these fans changed my way of thinking when I went out to take pictures at a basketball game last Thursday. The gym was 'more full than I've ever seen it, and there was a cheering section in attendance. They even had a band there to lead the crowd in cheers. It was great to see. Atoms finish season undefeated The Clinton Atoms closed off the 1986-87 schedule with two victories, one against Seaforth and the other against Mitchell. Out of the seventeen games the Atoms won 16 and tied one. In Clinton on January 20, the Atoms scored a 4-1 victory against Seaforth. Danny Wildfong opened up the scoring for Clinton in the first period at the 2:08 mark as he scored an unassisted goal on a beautiful solo effort. There was no scoring in the second period. Seaforth's Mike Moylan tied the score in the third period at 3:50. Clinton's Lee Gibbings gave Clinton a 2-1 lead at 7:51 after taking a long lead pass from Craig McAsh. Gibbings went in all alone and blasted a low shot that found the right hand corner. Less than a minute later Danny Wildfong deflected in a Jeff Oesch shot from the left point to increase Clinton's lead to 3-1. McBRIDE BROS. Mark Livermore with some excellent spade work found Chris all alone in front of the net for the goal. Goalies Derek Hoggarth and Dave Nahrgang played strong games in the Clin- ton cage. Clinton 4 — Mitchell 2 In Mitchell on January 21 the Clinton Atoms dumped Mitchell 4-2 to make it a clean slate of no blemishes for this year's schedule. ''In the first period at 8:25 an excellent rush by defenceman Shane ,MacDonald, produc- ed roducted a goal by Craig McAsh. Macdonald car- ried the puck the entire length of the ice, circled the Mitchell net, and found McAsh in front of the net for an easy goal. In the second period at the 1:12 mark, Mark Livermore gave Clinton a 2-Q advan- tage as he converted excellent passes from Chris Kennedy and Danny Wildfong. At 5:55 Danny Wildfong's wrist shot beat the Mit- chell goalie cleanly. Mark Livermore and Chris Kennedy earned assists on the play. In the third period, after Mitchell narrow- ed the score to 3-1, Craig McAsh scored his second goal of the contest as he scored on a beautiful pass out from behind the net from Danny Wildfong. Mitchell scored late in the game to make it 4-2 but it was too little, too late to over- come the Clinton lead. Pei Wees skim by Elma Logan On January 22 the Clinton Pee Wee A's played to a 5-4 win over Elma Logan. In the first period Shawn Chipchase scored at 14:34. Assisting on the play were Jason Carter and Scott Jewitt. Clinton held the lead for a short time. Un- til Jim Dejong tied it up. Assisting were Peter Mulder and Kevin Hiemstra. At 11:01 Shawn Chipchase scored and Jason Fleet assisted. This one goal lead was not held for long as Adam Dejong scored for Elma-Logan. In the second period Clinton pounced ahead with a slapshot from Matt Townsend. Assisting were Jason Fleet and -Jason Carter. Clinton scored again before the period was over when Chris Johnson put one in the net. Derek Kootstra assisted. In the third period Elma-Logan scored at 6:51. The goal was scored by Matt Coghlin. Shortly after that goal Jason Carter got another one for Clinton at, 6:27. Assisting were Scott Jewitt and Shawn Chipchase. At 3:30 Elma-Logan got their final goal, for a 5-4 win for Clinton.
