Rec news
Last week's rescheduled Clinton Recrea-
tion Committee meeting brought some
good news for those on the committee.
They won't have to worry about being
short-handed for their meetings much
longer as there were four applicants for
the available openings as of last
Wednesday.
One subject discussed at the meeting
was the upcoming improvements to be
carried out on the small baseball diamond
at the arena park.
For awhile now the recreation director,
Steve Campbell, has been discussing with
the committee the possibility of that dia-
mond being. worked on.
"It hasn't had anything done to it since it
was built. It needs it, it is in bad shape.
We're at the point we have to do something
with the diamond," Mr. Campbell said.
The work that is going to be carried out
includes putting drainage in the diamond
as.well as grading it. The total cost for the.
work will be approximately $5,000.
Mr. Campbell pointed out that now is the
right time for the work to be done as the
ground has yet to totally freeze, and if the
work is carried out in the spring, the field
will be torn up.
"We're trying to minimize the damage
as much as we can," he explained.
The rest of the committee agreed, and
moved to have the work started as soon as
possible.
Another project soon to be started at the
arena will be the installation of Tuflex
flooring. Skaters and hockey players at the
arena will be happy to see the flooring in
place, as it is cushioned and skate saving.
The total cost of the flooring, which will
be put in the lobby, change rooms, and
washrooms will he approximately $15.000.
Fortunately for the rec committee, this
cost will be lessened by a 50 per cent grant
for the Ontario Neighborhood Improve-
ment Program (ONIP). Of the 50 per cent
of the cost left over after the ONIP grant, a
capital conservation grant from the
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation will
pay a third. Therefore the cost to the com-
mittee will be ?.pproximately $5,000.
Mr. Campbell told me that other pro-
jects that have been carried out at the
'arena under these grants include the pur-
chasing of a condenser motor, the installa-
tion of washroom partitions, auditorium
flooring, the arena roof, and the new doors
In other business, the committee
discussed the possibility of keeping the
arena open for an extra two weeks in the
spring to accommodate a spring figure
skating school.
Mr. Campbell explained that he was ap-
proached by the Clinton Figure Skating
Club in regards to this extension because
Hensall and Wingham have cancelled their
schools for this year.
No firm decision was reached on the sub-
ject, but Mr. Campbell will be in-
vestigating it further.
Prior to the meeting, Mr. Campbell was ,
approached by a person who was concern-
ed that the hockey team from Central
Huron Secondary School (CHSS) gets ice
team at the arena for free.
"I based it on the fact that we use their
gym for dancercise and gymnastics. We
can't ver well turn around and chargia,
them when they don't charge us," Mr.
Campbell noted.
The concern was raised because ap-
, parently those who play on the CHSS team
cannot play on Clinton's Junior "D" team,
and this is detracting from the Mustangs,
The committee decided to look into the
rules, and see if the players can't play on
both teams. Currently, no charges will be
placed on the CHSS team.
"Comparison fees wise, we use $135 of
time, while they use, including a game
(they've had only one game) a week, at the
most $100. We're better off money wise,"
Mr. Campbell' explained.
For the last little bit of recreation news,
the committee voted to send two arena
employees to week long training courses at
the University of Guelph.
The courses are on plant management
and operation, and the cost to send Butch
Fleet and Randy -Marriage will be $738.50.
Mr. Marriage will be studying Basic
Refrigeration while Mr. Fleet will be in
year four of the Multi -Facility Manage-
ment course.
Clinton Atoms roll to ninth straight
victory as they edge Goderich 3-2
In Clinton on January 13, the Clinton
Atoms rolled to their ninth straight victory
as they edged a determined Goderich team
by a 3-2 count.
Clinton scored the only goal of the first
period at 5:56 as Chris Kennedy notched his
first of two markers on a beautiful set up
from linemates. Danny Wildfong and Marie
Livermore.
In the second period Trevor Bazinet tied
the score for Goderich at 1-1 at 5:35. At 6:48
Mark Livermore's powerplay goal on a
deflection of a Scott Wright drive from the
blue line gave Clinton a 2-1 lead. Before the
period ended Jason Hayter's goal tied the
game again at 2-2.
In the third period with only 38 seconds
gone Clinton's Chris Kennedy scored what
proved to be the winning goal from a face-
off deep in the Goderich zone. Centre Mark
Livermore cleanly won the draw to Danny
Wildfong who was positioned behind him.
Wildfong quickly sent a pass to Kennedy
who was unmolested in front of the Goderich
net. His shot cleanly found the top right
hand corner the running score.
Seaforth Tournament
On January 17, the Clinton Atoms won
their first game in the Annual Seaforth Op-
timist Atom Hockey Tourament by
defeating Sarnia Township 5-1.
In the first period Clinton grabbed a 1-0
lead at 1:08 when Danny Wildfnne's wrist
shot eluded the Sarnia goalie from twenty
feet out. The play was set up by Chris Ken-
nedy and Mark Livermore.
At 3:20 Scott Wright's booming slap shot
from the left point after taking a drop pass
from Chris Kennedy made it 2-0. Sarnia nar-
rowed the score to 2-1 before the first period
ended.
In the second period Danny Wildfongs se-
cond goal of the game at 4:13 made it 3-1.
The play started at centre ice when Scott
Wright fed a pass to Mark Livermore who
advertently set up Wildfong for a pretty
goal.
In the third period Lee Gibbings con-
verted a pass out from behind the net at 4:56
from Craig McAsh. Chris Kennedy closed
out the scoring with 25 seconds left on the
game. Hard work from Danny Wildfong and
Shane MacDoiI ld helped set up the goal.
Clinton's Danny Wildfong was named the
Most Valuable Player of the game.
Clinton 7, Burford 2
In the second game the Clinton Atoms
spotted Burford the first goal but came roar-
ing bails for a 7-2 victory as Clinton's high-
flying line of Mark Livermore, Danny
Wildfong and Chris Kennedy spearheaded
the attack. The two picked up a total of 16
scoring points.
Danny Wildfong paved the way with four
goals and two assists while Livermore and
Kennedy eacn nau true points on one goal
and four assists each. Craig McAsh added
the other goal on assists from Lee Gibbings
and Nathan Burns.
The defence core of Shane MacDonald -
Scott Shaddick, Scott wright - Bryan Wat-
son, and Jeff Desch - Tyler McGregor pro-
vided excellent blue line depth. The goalten-
ding of Derek Hoggar•th and Dave Nahrgang
again played very well.
Nathan Burns was named the Most
Valuable Player of the game.
Clinton will now meet Lambeth in the
championship game. Because both these
teams are tied up in the North America
Silver Stick Finals this coming weekend in
Sarnia, the championship game will be
scheduled for a later date.
Incidentally, the Atoms will. be travelling
to Sarnia this weekend to participate in the
Silver Stick Tournament.
Their first game is scheduled for January
23 at 9:10 a.m. against Copden (Sudbury
area team ). Their second game will be on
January 24 at 7 a.m. against Merriton (St.
Catherines area ), and their third game is in
Sarnia at 3 p.m., against Bracebridge, •
The Atoms would like to thank Realtor
Mason Bailey for his kindness in paying for
the entry fee of this Silver Stick Tourna-
ment. Clinton Minor Hockey wishes the
Atom team the best of luck this weekend.
