Tykes take two games on weekend
They had fun and they took part in keen competition in Clinton when the invitational
volleyball tournament was held at St. Joseph's Separate School. The girl's team from
Blyth Public School was there to take part. In between games this energetic group posed
for the camera. They included, Rhonda Stadelmann in front, Heidi Scrimgeour, Julie
Bromley and Leah Richmond, kneeling; Tabath Montgomery, Laurie Wharton, Tammi
Medd, Tamara Bearss and Donna Lynn Armstrong, standing. (Shelley McPhee Haist

Over 30 teams affected
by arena ice breakdown
By David Emslie
BLYTH - Over 30 teams have been af-
fected by the January 6 breakdown of the ice
plant.at the arena here.
"The brine chiller broke on them," Blyth
Councillor Bill Howson explained. "It's go-
ing to be about January 26 before the new
chiller is in. Originally they thought it would
be the twenty-second or twenty-third."
Included in those left without ice to play
their sports on are 17 broomball teams, six
teams from the Maitland Valley hockey
league, two hockey teams from the ('hris-
tian Reformed league, seven minor hockey
teams And figure skaters. A major broom -
ball tournament scheduled to rein from
January 21 to 25 has also had to be
cancelled.
The total repair hill to replace the 20 -year-
old part will be between $23,000 and $24,000,
Mr. Howson noted.
He said that while other parts of the ice
plant are equally old, a preventative
maintenance program is carried out yearly
to stay on top of any problems that may oc-
cur. Unfortunately, this was one component
of the machine that could not be checked as
it was an inside tube that rusted through.
"The sad part is, if we had a breakdown
we always hoped it would be in mid-January
(with the cold weather), brit this couldn't
have come at a worse time," Councillor
Howson said.
Arena co -manager Murray Black said
that the teams have been fortunate in fin-
ding other arenas to carry out their sports.
He added, "If this I colder) weather keeps
up, we'll have it ( ice) here."

BLYTH - The Blyth Tykes travelled to
Luckri 1ddavy night for an exhibition
game. Luc heard they were good, but
even with eight and nine year olds on their
team, Blyth held their own and came home
with a victory win of 5-4. Considering Blyth
had not been on the ice for two weeks (due to
the break -down of the ice machine) it did not
take them long to get back in the swing .of
things.
Four goals were scored by Lucknow; two
in the first period and two in the second, but
goaltender, Darryl Bromley, who had stop-
ped many others said, "No More".
First goal for Blyth was by Jeff Cowan,
followed by a second one assisted by Aman-
da Anderson. Six minutes remaining in the
second period and defenseman, Corey Shan-
non crossed the blue line shot, and scored,
making the score 4-3.
Entering into the third period Blyth was
just getting warmed up. Seven minutes re -
maining Jeff Cowan shot the puck to
defenseman Shane Burkholder, who had
positioned himself in front of the net, caught
the puck, shot and scored bringing it to a tie
of 4-4. With only two and a half minutes left
in the game Jeff Cowan scored the deciding
goal.
The next game was Saturday in Clinton.
First and second periods passed' with
numerous shots at both nets but to no avail.
Goaltepder Shane Burkholder was on his
toes, stopping the.puck, before it could sneak
by with excellent help from the defence.
The team worked together, passing the
puck and showing their skills as never
before. This was one of their best games,
showing how well they have improved since
the first of the season.
One and a half minutes into the third
period Mark "Sparky" Wilson crossed the
blue line, shooting the puck, it glided
smoothly across the ice into the net followed
by Mark himself. Mark Mut grinning
from ear to ear and his stick in the air.
With only three and a half minutes re-
maining in the game, Clinton gave it one
more try. Defenseman Corey Shannon was
ready, knocking the puck away, both
players fell, sliding past the net only for the
Clinton player to swing back and catch the
puck with his stick. It slid petween Shane's
legs to make a tie of 1-1.
Excitement was mounting with two and a
half minutes left in the game when Mark
"Sparky" Wilson shot the puck from out of
the right wing scoring, for a victory of 2-1.
Tyke players are Ronnie Abel-Rinn,
Amanda Anderson, Greg Blois, _ Jason
Badley, Darryl Bromley, S`h'ane
Burkholder, Michael Courtney, Scott
Bromley, Jeff • Cowan, Jeff Ferguson,
Michael Haggitt, Jeff Johnston, Corey Shan-
non, Mark Wilson and Coach Barry
Bromley.

School Dance
By Kelly Cook
For the second year in a row the senior
grades at Blyth School are rockin' back to
the '50s. A '50s dance was held at noon hour
on January 16, organized and run by the stu-
dent council. All students were encouraged
to dress and dance like they did in the
fabulous '50s. There were pop and chips
available and everyone had a groovy time.

BLYTH - As I have been told numerous
times by my brothers and sisters, concern-
ing my so called "wit" or style of humor,
that I need my head read.
Well, I'm here now and actually
undergoing the process, but not necessari-
ly for that particular reason!
For anyone who followed my essays in
November on "Epilepsy — It's Not What
You Think," you may recall the tests I
would be undergoing in the spring.
Well, what can I say, but spring has ob-
viously arrived early, at least from this
aspect of it.
I am not situated in the same room at
London's University Hospital as the young
lad from Holland was in: I was hoping to
interview him. U fortunately for me, but
great for him, his recovery after the
surgery for his seizures was nothing short
of miraculous, considering he was out in
five days following the brain surgery! I
can recall having my tonsils removed 18
years ago and I remained in the hospital

Though every operation is considered
major, I am sure that removal of the ton-
sils would seem mild opposed to working
with such a tender and sensitive area as
the human brain.
As the brain controls every movement
you make or anything you say or do,
anything could be affected afterwards.
Fortunately the best brain surgeons in the
world are here. Apparently though, as sen-
sitive as it is, the brain heals very quickly,
as opposed to having surgery anywhere
else.
At the moment, I am hooked up to an
electroenceplalagraph, more commonly
referred to as an EEG machine.
What makes it so unique now, as corn -
pared to just a few years ago, is the fact
that the machine doesn't have to he recor-
ding at all times, showing your brain
waves. We are also connected to a com-
puterized tape recorder that tapes
everything that occurs. Then, during a
seizure, the nurse will record the time

shown on the tape recorder at the time of
occurrance..
The eurologists can then play the tape
back to the specific time mentioned and
your brain waves are then pointed out on
the EEG machine. This then helps the doc-
tors to determine the general area or areas
that are affected by the seizures.
Usually, approximately five seizures
will give the neurologists the sufficient
data that is required. Of course, the longer
it takes to have enough seizures to give the
doctors the required information, the
longer you remain a patient.
I never thought I'd hear myself say this,
but unfortunately, I haven't experienced
' any seizures as of yet. 1 hope they begin
soon. (maybe 1 should use reverse
psychology 1
So, I've sent this article to update
everyone on my status. Maybe by trying to
have this done for a specific time to send
back with my husband, Bev, will get me
worked up and will help induce seizures.
Once this stage has been completed, you
advance to the second stage. This is where
you are informed of the area/areas of the
brain affected by the seizures and if
surgery is recommended. I won't even
begin to think of that though, for I have this
hurdle to get over first.
I wish to inform my readers that (unfor-
tunately ), I'm feeling great -getting lots of
sleep and eating much better than I had
while at home -contemplating my stay at
the hospital.
Apparently, I'm feeling too good and the
seizures haven't been set off like they are
while I'm under stress. But, it sure is nice
being waited on hand and foot for a
change: Hope to be back soon.
Quote of the Week — Be grateful for
gardening - it is a relief to deal with dirt
outside of the house for a change.
