Shortage
Clinton's new deputy clerk -treasurer,
Ken Holmes, had it easy for his first Clin-
ton Recreation . Committee meeting on
January 8. There was a shortage of
members, and the meeting had to be
postponed.
Recreation director, Steve Campbell,
explained the committee's role in local
politics', and exactly why the meeting
could not continue with only three
members.
DEIVID EMSLIE
"The Clinton Recreation Committee is a
subcommittee of council, which means
most decisions are voted on and submitted
as recommendations to council. With that
in mind, we as a committee must have a
quorum (a quarum being five members of
a nine member committee) to make these
recommendations."
Because we have so many events that
need preplanning, to miss a month's
meetings really backs up our schedule,"
he explained.
Unfortunately, even though only four
members were needed to have a quarum
as the committee is down to seven
members, only three members were pre-
sent, and a few important agenda items
had to be shelved until later this week.
Because of the current shortage of
members to this committee, there is a
possibility of this situation arising again.
Since the departure of Linda Reid from
recreation last year, and Steve Gibbings
early this year, the committee bas had two
positions to fill.
However, there has been no great rush
from the citizens of Clinton to fill these
spots.
I mentioned in one of my December col-
umns that the committee was searching
for at least five applicants as our mayor
would like to see two applicants for each
position, and a few of the members terms
were coming up for renewal.
' This goal of five new applicants seems
pretty far fetched now, as no applications
have been received.
I can't really grasp why no one is willing
to give this committee a shot. If anything,
they hold some of the most interesting
meetings I have attended in my short
career as a journalist.
Probably even more important, their
Meetings are very short. They hold short
sub -committee meetings every month
prior to the actual recreation meeting, and
when it comes time for this meeting, it on-
ly runs for 1.5 to 2 hours.
Another way in which their meetings dif-
fer is that the members of this committee
don't speak just to hear themselves heard.
This could account for the speed of their
meetings as they pass through the
business without petty arguments.
Need another reason to join? Well, no ex-
perience is necessary, although some in-
terest in Clinton's sports world would pro-
bably be appreciated. ,
Actually, Steve told me that the only
criteria is that the person applyy'ng must
be a resident of town and of voting age.
Lastly, when someone does join, it
doesn't necessarily mean they are com-
mitted to a three-year term on the commit-
tee. It is not a paid parsition, arid therefore
no one can be forced to stay on. Again,
some sort of 2ommittment would be ap-
preciated by the committee.
Anyone interested in applying for one' df'
the positions should apply to the clerk's of- '
fice at Box 400 by the end of January.
Sports Spot
Has everyone seen the sports survey
advertisement on the back page of this
week's issue? If not, wait for a minute, and
let me tell you a bit about it.
Now, two folks in town are considering
building a sports complex in town, and
they would like your input on what you
might like to see, or what you would be
likely to use.
A spot like this would be ideal for both
Clinton's young and old. From experience
I can tell you that racquet ball is one of the
most fun, and at the same time, most tir-
ing games I have played in awhile.
As racquetball courts are• one of the op-
tions for the proposed club, I will surely be
filling in my response form.
I can't really vouch for squash, but I've
heard good reports from people that play.
Then of course, there is the spa facilities
with a sauna and whirlpool.
Take my word for it, there is nothing
quite so relaxing as a nice whirlpool after
40 minutes of cut throat racquetball. •
•.Anyways, I don't want to ramble on the
subject. I just wanted to point out that this
town may have the opportunity to host a
sports club, and we shouldn't let the oppor-
tunity pass.
The least you can do is let the people
know your feelings on the club, and let
them take it from there.
Bailey sending Atoms
The Clinton Atoms received a pleasant
