Church looks
at 1986
CLINTON - Another year has passed in
the life of the Clinton Christian Reformed,
and it's time to look back at 1986.
One of the important steps taken in 1986,
was the beginning of moves to create
Vanastra Christian Reformed Church
I CRC) as an independent congregation. It
has been in existence since 1973, and started
as an outreach into the newly created com-
munity of Vanastra. It has recently grown
under the leadership of Evangelist Jim
Visser and a nucleus of dedicated families
worshipping there, so that formal organiza-
tion"fan become a reality.
Worship Services in the Clinton CRC
began on January 1 with the New Year's
Day service, and ended with a New Year's
Eve service on December 31. Pastor
Samplonius continued his series of sermons
throught the Heidelberg Catechism in one of
the two services held every Sunday,
finishing the part dealing with deliverance
and beginning the part that deals with
gratitude. They are now at Lord's Day 40 of
the 52 found in the catechism.
The sacrament of baptism was ad-
ministered to 22 children at various times
during the year, and 17 young people con-
fessed their faith publicly, thereby joining
the church as full members.
During the year, five members died, the
latest being Andrew Veenstra and Douwe
Bruinsma.
The congregation has changed markedly
in recent years. What started out as a
church with mostly young immigrant
families has now a sizable number of elderly
and widows. Attempts to meet the needs of
these members locally is proving difficult.
A number have left for centers where
facilities suited to these needs are found,
although they would have preferred to stay
near their families.
At the year's end the membership total
was about 650 in 134 families. During the
past year the church council has tried to
come up with expansion and renovation
plans, but has not been successful so fa
Hopefully, concrete steps can be taken sod
to get the much needed construction off the
ground.
This week the congregation is saddened
by the news of the passing of Geraldine
VanderBerg, wife of the former pastor,
after a long struggle with cancer, in Edmon-
ton. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved
family and congregation in Edmonton.
