Voltage reduction test conducted
Ontario ,Hydro will conduct a voltage
reduction test on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Voltage on the Ontario Hydro electrical
grid will be reduced at three intervals dur-
ing the day.
Testing the power distribution grid in this
way helps to ensure that in the event of a
generation emergency (such as the
breakdown of a large generating unit),
there will be no power interruptions. For
most customers, the effect of these reduc-
tions will be imperceptible.
In the morning, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30
a.m., voltage will be reduced three per cent.
Between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 2:30
p.m., and again from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.,
voltage will be reduced five per cent.
A tive per cent reduction in voltage
distributed over the Hydra system is
equivalent to reducing approximately
500)000 kilowatts of electricity demand. That
is' the output of a single Pickering reactor
and, if needed, is enough to meet the elec-
tricity needs of more than 180,000 homes.
Data collected from this test will also help
Hydro locate and resolve potential
operating or customer problems.
Hydro conducts a voltage reduction test
once a year.
