The game was on home ice with Zurich visiting. Coach Barry Bromley alternated the goalies, giving everyone a chance on both the ice and in the net. This seems to work well with no one specific being left with all the duties and tension that a goalie faces at the net. Within the first minute of play Blyth took numerous shots on Zurich's net, but unfor- tunately, none counted, as their goalie was obviously on his toes. His endurance level was finally met, when Blyth's first goal was scored at the minute and a half mark, by Michael Haggitt, with Jeff Cowan assisting him. Blyth's first line didn't allow Zurich one chance to shoot at their net in the first three minutes of, play. The puck was kept in Zurich's end throughout that time. The next line change told a different story, though, as Zurich then went to tie the score. But, that wasn't all. They were determined to take the lead, but with the excellent work displayed by Daryll Bromley, he caught up to his opponent on a breakaway and he was unable to attempt to score. This got the team si2zling and only seconds later, Jeff Ferguson obtained an unassisted goal. The action didn't stop there, for only 39 seconds later Jeff Cowan earned his first goal of the day. "Sparky" Mark Wilson assisted him, making it 3-1 for Blyth. Before the change of lines,, Jeff tucked the puck away again, only 25 seconds later, giv- ing Blyth a three goal lead. For the remaining eight minutes of the first period, neither team was able to score. Greg Blok made an excellent stop on one of Zurich's shots, which would have closed the gap much more, had it went in. Zurich's next attempt was one that was so close, that even thelayers had mistaken it to be a goal, as sticks were being held high and sounds of cheers were being heard. Blyth fooled them, and got the last cheer, as the puck had hit the post and bounced back out again to be caught in amongst the numerous players in front of the net. Corey Shannan then caught sight of the puck and nabbed on- to it! Corey's hockey capabilities were then shown in the beginning of the second period, when he was able to stop Zurich on a breakaway, then he stole the puck at Blyth's blueline and hussled back to Zurich's end to score! This made the score 5-1 in favor of Blyth. ,p9rey, Jdr started something that the team was catching onto quickly as the team. was obviously becoming partial to the blueline. Only 35 seconds later, Michael Haggitt took puck in from the blue line to score his se o ;;::: oal of the evening, with Corey assisting . Zurich then came to life three minutes later, to Mark their second goal for the even- ing. The scure was then 7-2 in favor of Blyth at this time. This brought out the determination in Michael Haggitt to keep the margin between themIn less than one minute, he scored twice. Assisting Michael on his first goal was Jeff Cowan and Corey Shannan, while Mark Wilson was his helper for the second goal. The next shift was a partner -combination of skills in hockey shown by Jeff Cowan and Daryll Bromley. These boys worked together, passing the puck to Zurich's end four times and put the puck where itcounts each time!,ach skated and stick handled the puck to ec- tion, with Jeff putting the finishing to ches on to score. With seven minutes remaining in the game, Zurich scored theirthird and final goal of the game. The statistics for the even- ing were: Jeff Cowan, ? goals, 2 assists; Michael Haggitt, 4 goals and 1 assist; Corey °Shannan, 1 goal, 2 assists; Jeff Ferguson, 1 goal; Daryll Bromley, 4 assists and "Sparky" Wilson, 2 assists. The final score was Blyth 13 - Zurich 3. Blyth vs: Huron Park On Saturday, the boys travelled to Huron Park, to start the year off right with another win in their favor. Again, they faced 'a goalie who was as alert as Blyth was determined. Jeff Cowan attempted three times to score. With the pressure being put forth, not to speak of Jeff's endurance, one finally went in to open the books for Blyth. Daryll Bromley then set "Sparky" Wilson up in front of the net who then went on to carry out his duties by putting it in Huron Park's net. The next goal was earned by Jeff Cowan, coming in from the blueline. - With 19 seconds left in the first period, Huron Park opened their books, making it 3-1 in Blyth's favor at the end of the first period. Early in the second period, Huron Park fought back and scored on a breakaway, cutting it down to 3-2, Blyth. Within a minute of their goal, Jeff Cowan scored again. But, Huron Park wouldn't give in either, scoring again, closing Blyth's lead to 4-3. "Sparky" Wilson then came to the rescue as he attempted a breakaway goal, but his first attempt was unsuccessful. Then, only seconds, later, the puck came out in front of Huron Park's net where he was located and he scored. Huron Park wouldn't give up, though, as ' they scored again later as the puck was loose in Blyth . end. This made it 5-4 with Blyth still leading. The boys then got down to real business and decided this was enough of this kind of Ai play. Jeff Cowan made another attempt to Br score but the goalie stopped it. Then the skate was on the other. foot! It was unfortunate for Huron Park that Jeff was able to keep tally on the puck and tuck- ed it in for his 'fourth goal of the day. The game was like a teeter-totter, as Huron Park came back to score again, making it 6-5 for Blyth. Corey Shannan then displayed his stick work and came around from behind Huron Park's net and planted the puck in to score. Jeff Cowan got back into action, placing the first attempt in front of the net, as the goalie made the save and hit it out. Jeff then pushed the puck in on. the rebound, giving Blyth a 8-5 lead. Seconds later, after a save was made in Blyth's net, Jeff skated away to place the puck securely in Huron Park's net again. Michael Haggitt made two attempts on goal, following Jeff's goal, and put his se- cond shot in to make the final score 10-5 in Blyth's favor. Jeff Cowan earned six of the 10 goals; with Sparky Wilson getting two goals while Corey Shannan and Michael Haggitt shared a goal each. The Tykes will be, hosting Bayfield on Saturday at 10 a.m. This will be followed by the Novice "B" team playinT Eayfield as well at 11 a.m. Novice B The Novice B team, under the coaching of Wayne McDougall started their 1987 year off with a very close game, but, unfortunately, close doesn't count. Saturday morning they played host to the remaining Novice team from Goderich (not the same team as they defeated last week ) who took the lead in the game by the end of the first period. Blyth then came to life when Daryll Shannan took the puck from behind Blyth's net and then fled up the ice to Goderich's end and plhced the puck neatly into their net, closing the gap to a lead of 2-1 for Goderich. The opposition then got down to business and scored on goalie, Chris Bromley, for the third and last time of the game. Brad Anderson then earned an unassisted goal, bringing the game to 3-2. With three minutes left in the game, each team tried hard to score, but were unable to do so. Goderich went home with a 3-2 victory over Blyth.
