It's always about this time of the year
that I start thinking it's time forme to get
in shape. I'm still young, so I shouldn't be
hacking after running only one block.
Therefore, each year, for the past three
or four years, I have resolved to quit smok-
ing some time during the year.
Well, this year is going to be different.
Instead of making a meaningless resolu-
tion, I am just going to quit.
I really like the idea of being in the shape
I was four years ago before I started smok-
ing, and I figure, since I've only been
smoking for such a short time, I should be
able to pull it off.
There are a few reasons for my wish to
quit, the first being a history of heart pro-
blems in my family.
Now, I'll admit, my heart is really the
'least of my worries right now, I'm more
worried about my lungs. I know for a fact
that my lungs are in pretty bad shape. I
took up raquetball shortly before moving
here, and for about the first month of play,
I was sure I had a collapsed lung after run-
ning for five or 10 minutes.
Since there were no raquetball courts in
this area, I took up basketball for the sum-
mer, and found my lungs hadn't improved.
' I still couldn't run for any extended length
of time without wishing I could curl up and
die afterwards.
I'm hoping the health club does get built
here, because I'm sure that would
strengthen my resolve.
Now, I'd set my- quitting date for mid-
night on the evening of December 31. I
thought I'd smoke like a chimney up to the
last minute, then just give it up.
Well, I've had to change my mind since
then for two separate reasons. The first
reason is if I quit right at that time, it will
seem too much like a New Year's resolu-
tion, and if I try and follow that route
again, I know I won't make it. Secondly, it
will be virtually impossible to quit at the
stroke of midnight if I'm at a party,
because I smoke the most at parties.
Therefore, the , quitting date has been
postponed to midnight on the evening of
January 1.
On the subject of methods of quitting,
I've had any number of suggestions, but
I'd like to try the good old fashioned will
power method. I think this one might work
because so many people have been telling
me I have no will power and I'd like to pro-
ve them wrong.
To add to this stopping method, I'm con-
sidering getting myself into a rigorous
physical fitness kick.
My family has aided me in this area as I
received a rowing machine on my birthday
as well as wrist weights, and on
Christmas, I got an exercise mat.
You see, I figure if I. can get myself back
into the shape I think is right for me, then
there is no way I'll want to start smoking
again.
I have been psyching myself up for the
big day for about a month now, and I've
yet to scare myself too badly, so I guess
there's still hope. However, even if I
haven't scared myself, I've heard enough
withdrawal horror ctnriec to make mea hit
queasy.
Even writing this column is going to help
me a little bit. I mean, if I know there is so-
meone out there who has read about my
strong resolve, and what great shape I'm
going to be in, then I'm going to be more
than a bit wary of sparking up my favorite
brand when I'm out and about in town.
Anyways, by the time the next paper hits
the streets, I should be on my, way to
hosting a physically fit body with nice,
clean lungs. Wish me luck.
Football Pool
Some readers might remember awhile
back a mention I made of taking part in a
football pool.
Working in the sports department, one
might think that I should do pretty well in
such a pool. Unfortunately, this was not
the case.
Out of the 27 competitors in this National
Football League (NFL) pool, my. partner
and I ranked 22nd at year end.
Hey, it's not as bad as it looks. We only
fell 211 points behind the person in the
number one spot over the 16 game
schedule.
Considering my record of guessing the
outcome of games in the both the Canadian
Football League and the NFL, I don't think
I'll be taking any bets on the Superbowl.

"While operating an ATV on a highway,
trappers will have to display a slow-moving
sign on the rear of their vehicle; hold a valid
driver's licence; wear an approved helmet;
and, of course, have insurance," said
Fulton.
