Special birds visit at Christmas
By Art Singleton
Federation of Ontario Naturalists
Just before Christmas each year, flocks of
"tiny white" birds arrive, to wheel and swirl
in farm fields and open countryside.
Aptly named snow buntings, they're
erotic ground finches, to whom "balmy On-
tario" is the southern wintering ground.
It's intriguing to watch a flock, and you'll
certainly have the opportunity if you watch
for them. The "backdrop" is usually
windless morning when all seems hushed,
almost eeries, in the soft winter sunlight.
Suddenly, out of nowhere appears a flock of
10 to 400 twittering birds. They arrive in a
long, undulating formation, usually waist -
high above the snow.
Alighting almost at once, the buntings
literally run from one projecting plant stem
to another, often leaping into the air to strip
and devor the weed seeds. As a flock works
the field, those in the rear rise up, 'wing for-
ward, and alight ahead of the others.
People are so struck by the flocks that
they seldom get a good look at individual
snow buntings. When they do, most are sur-
prised both by the size (almost as large as a
grosbeak) and that they are not all pure
white. The bunting's white head, breat and
underside contrast strikingly with the black
and white wings. Most birds also have an
elaborate pattern of rusty -brown areas
which, together make the bunting almost
gawdy in appearance. Females are more
brown - notably on top of their heads.
Snow buntings spend the summer
throughout the arctic, nesting on the tundra
of the Canada and Alaska, the Arctic
Islands, Greenland, Iceland and the USSR.
Their nests wedged into any available cran-
ny - under stones and rock piles or in cliffs -
each pair raises a brood of four to seven
young.
Triggered by shortening days, the bun-
tings bumped their way southward into both
North America and Euralia, congregating
into small feeding flocks as they moved,
Many of the birds now making their debut
in southern Ontario bred in Greenland.
Following the Canadian coastline
southward they simply "turned right" at the
mouth of the St. Lawrence and kept going.
They have followed the waterway west to
the "banana belt" along the Lake Ontario
shoreline, when the lake's moderating effect
melts enough snow to ensure a good supply
of emergent weeds.
Fields with cattle, horses, sheep or other
livestock hold special appeal to the snow
buntings for several reasons. First, the

stock churns the snow exposing additional
grasses. And secondly, hay and other fodder
offers a positive feast of seeds blown across
the snow's surface.
Snow bunting flocks will often return to
such fields (and'to fields with millet or other
fine seed scattered atop the snow) day after
day, ap winter long
So watch for the btintings this week over
