fold new
scheme to
raise money
for arts
How would you like to double your
money? That's what more than 200 Ontario
arts organizations will have the opportunity
of doing during the next three years. Invest-
ment In The Arts, a bold new $10 million pro-
gram launched 'today, will offer one dollar
for every dollar raised by Ontario arts
organizations.
Lily Munro, Minister of Citizenship and
Culture, said the new program will help arts
organizations to achieve stability and en-
courage financial self-sufficiency.
"Investments In The Arts will match one
dollar for every fund-raising dollar raised
above the fund-raising base," she said.
"And, if the dollar comes from a new cor-
porate donor we will match it two to one."
The program will provide arts organiza-
tions with the opportunity of regaining a
solid financial standing. The monies raised
will be put into an endowment fund with the
organization having access to the interest,"
she said. "And the matching Ministry
monies can be used to retire the ac-
cumulated deficit."
Ontario -based arts organizationswhich
have been serving the community for three
years, have operating budgets in excess of
$75,000 and are currently receiving
assistance through the Ontario Arts Council
are eligible. Arts organizations in northern
Ontario are eligible with an operating
budget of $50,000 and over.
Major arts service organizations are also
included in the program in recognition of
their financial needs in maintaining a viable
and very important support network.
"A healthy cultural sector benefits a
society both spiritually and economically,"
she said. "Many people do not realize that
the cultural sector is Canada's llth largest
manufacturing industry and is the sixth
largest employer. As well, culture can open
doors to many international opportunities
such as trade."
"Investing in the arts makes good
economic sense."

Rollins to play Othello
The Stratford Festival has announced
Howard Rollins will play the title role in
the Festival's 1987 production of Othello.
"This is exciting news," Festival Ar-
tistic Director John Neville said today.
"My decision to do Othello was contingent
on getting the right actor for the title role.
From the beginning, Howard Rollins was
the man I wanted and my conviction was
reinforced this summer in London when I
saw him co-star with Paul Scofield in I'm
Not Rappaport. He is an outstanding actor
and I am delighted to have him join our
superb ensemble of actors here at
Stratford."
Howard Rollins is currently starring in
the London production of I'm Not Rap-
paport. His list of New York theatre
credits include Streamers, Measure For
Measure, The Taking of Miss Jamie and
Fathers and Sons for the New York
Shakespeare Festival. On Broadway, he
has appeared in G.R. Point, The Mighty
Gents, We Interruptet This Program .., and
with The Dance Theatre of Harlem as Nar-
rator. His Off-Broadway credits include
Medal of Honour Rag and The Passing
Game.
On television, he has starred in
numerous mini-series and movies for
television including King, Roots, The Next
Generation, Thornwell, A Doctor's Story,
The Boy King, Children of Times Square,
The Johnny Gibson Story and Wildside.
On film, his performance as Coalhouse
Walker in Milos Forman's movie version
of Ragtime earned him an Academy
Award nomination as best supporting ac-
tor. He also starred in A Soldier's Story
directed by Norman Jewison.
Othello opens July 31 in the Festival
Theatre. It will be directed by John Neville
with design by Astrid Janson. Further in-
formation on casting for the 1987 season
will be announced as soon as the informa-
tion is, available.
