That's not to say that sports ever left the school, but there was a short lull there when there wasn't anything going on. The reason for my delight lies in the fact that I now have new coaches to talk to for my stories and columns, and I can take some basketball pictures, rather than straight hockey, as has been the case lately. It's not that I have anything against hockey, it's just nice to have a bit of varie- ty for our sports pages. The first coach I got a chance to talk to about. his team was Rick Hilliard. Mr. Hilliard coaches the Junior Boys basket- ball team at the school. Before getting into what he had to say, I should point out that Mr. Hilliard is one hot basketball player himself. I played a bit of ball with him this summer, so you can take my word for it. The juniors had a fairly good turnout for the team this year, and no final cuts had to be made. I was feeling a bit cynical about the team the first time I saw them play this year because they took a hard fall against a team from Sarnia in exhibition play, but as usual, my predictions were wrong. They played their first league game last week against Listowel and pulled out a 46-41 overtime win. Mr. Hilliard explained that though the team was behind for the whole game, they came back and tied it up with 39 seconds left in the game. Once they got into over- time the Clinton boys poured it on and scored seven points while holding Listowel to only two. "They really played well in the latter part of the game. They were tight and kind of hyper in the early going," Mr. Hilliard noted. The high scorer for the Redmen was Daryl Hemingway with 14 points. Murray Bechtel and Jeff Roy chipped in with 11 points each to add to Clinton's scoring. Mr. Hilliard is impressed with Hem- ingway's play and attitude. "Hemingway is going to be an excep- tional player, he is quite a smart young guy and he is very coachable. I think by the time he reaches senior he could be the best player in the school." While the team did well in their first start, Mr. Hilliard mentioned that at this stage he is having a bit of trouble with get- ting them to practice, or getting them to show up at practice. As it now stands he said the team has a game tentatively scheduled for January 7. On the senior side of things, coach Ken Reidy told me a bit about a tournament his tea ,s ended in Listowel. They took their ffiyst game 6-41 against Port Elgin, but dropped their next one to Sacred Heart from Walkerton 41-38. In their first league game on December 3 they defeated Norwell 69-4 Mr. Reidy said they had fairly good in- terest in the team this year with 13 players turning out. Some notable players of these 13 are three players back from last year that are starters. They are Don Hearn at guard, Terry Cox at centre, Travis Lyndon at low post and Shawn Lester at forward. Two other players Mr. Reidy said are getting quite a bit of play are Steve Ryan and Bob Grunwald. They share the left forward spot. Mr. Reidy, who has been coaching basketball for about 16 years, explained that Clinton plays in an 11 team league and their opponents will include Goderich, Wingham, Seaforth, Exeter, St. Marys, Mitchell, Listowel, Norwell and two teams from Stratford. Last year the team ended up with a six win and five loss record which landed them a spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately they were bumped out in the first round. However, Mr. Reidy ' sees a different future for this year's team. "I think we should be in the top four," he said. Including tournament games, which are exhibition, the team has won three and lost two so far this year. CHSS will be hosting a tournament this Saturday, December 13, beginning at 9 a.m. Six teams will be taking part in the games, and the final game will start at 6:15 p.m. Atoms take Se PUBLIC,IpOTICE JEWELLERY_ THE SQUARE, GODERICH WILL BE CLOSING DECEMBER 31st* 31 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN EVERY SALE! Two minutes later, Danny Wildfong with his second goal of the game ended the scor- ing. Tyler McGregor and Chris Kennedy gathered assists on the goal. Danny Wildfong was named Clinton's Most Valuable Player in this contest. In Clinton's second game a more powerful team from the Toronto area, King's City, was just too much* the Clinton boys as they skated to a 4-1 victory. 0. Clinton stayed with the visitors on the outstanding goaltending 'of Derek lloggarth and Dave Nahrgang and even up to the last two minutes of the game Clinton trailed only 2-1. But King's City put the game away with two quick goals in the last two minutes. Time and time again King's City shooters were thwarted by the excellent goaltending of the Clinton duo. Derek Hoggarth was given the nod as Clinton's Most Valuable Player in this game. In the third game Clinton's goaltenders Dave Nahrgang and Derek Hoggarth earn- ed their eighth shutout of the season as Clin- ton defeated Port Elgin 4-0. ' Clinton's smooth little centreman Mark Livermore paced the attack with two goals and two assists. Danny. Wildfong followed close behind with one goal and two assists. The other member of the line Chris Kennedy notched the other goal. Craig McAsh and Shane MacDonald earned one assist each. Mark Livermore was voted the game's Most Valuable Player for his fine effort. In the Consolation Championship game Hanover outchecked the focal boys enroute to a 2-0 victory. It was the first shutout of the season against the boys. With the loss the team's record now stands at 20 victories and three losses for the season. Clinton defenceman, Scott Wright was voted Most Valuable Player of the game.
