Prices of the basic radial arm saw vary, depending on size, motor size, standard or heavy duty and wheather they are on sale or not. One of the extras that will be needed right away is a steel stand for the saw, unless there's already a suitalbe stand or table available. A pair of safety goggles should also be purchased if the saw operator already doesn't have one. The other optional extras, that can be add- ed to from time to time include two popular items — an adjustable dado cutter and a molding head -cutter bit set. The dado cutter will allow the operator to make some professional -type wood joints and the molding set will permit him to make 0/ tit; r 0/ ti the handyman Tools do not a handyman make. But they sure help. The true, born handyman can usually make do with his trusty old handsaw, and hand drill, hacksaw, hammer, a favorite couple of chisels and sandpaper. His real assets are his intuitive knowledge of just how to do exactly what's needed, a steady hand and eye and the wisdom to know when to try something and when not to. But the average man or woman is not so blessed. What we mere mortals need are tools, gadgets and thing-amajigs that will make us into expert mechanics, woodworker, carpenters and fixer -uppers willing and able to tackle every and anything. And the tool makers — bless them — know this and cater to us by manufacturing tools to make it easier to overcome problem: that many of us never even knew existed. Any inept and would-be handyman knows the frustration of trying to cut a straight edge on a board or piece of lumber with a handsaw. Not only does the line waver and wander alarmingly, but the saw blade also binds. The answer, of course, is a motorized table saw or radial arm saw that will make perfectly square and clean cuts that are unerringly accurate. There are those who swear by the table saw and others who would stake their lives on the radial arm saw. The difference with the radial arrp saw is that your bring the blade down to the work piece so you can see just what you are doing, and you move the blade, rather than the workpiece, during the cut. The radial arm saw is a favorite among those who aspire to being woodworkers. There's the basic saw and then there are the attachments which together can almost cost more thant he saw itself. The beauty, of course, is that the basic saw can be the initial gift and if the recipient takes to it like an addict, the various at- tachments can be bought for birthdays Oki e. There's also a surface rotary planer, a sanding drum, a sanding wheel, a drill chuck which converts the saw into a drill or router, a mitre square, a picture framing kit and various clamps • and vises for holding down work. Perhaps the most important accessory you oan buy with the saw is the radial arm saw book, which details all the kinds of things you can do with the saw. One last thing,. Make sure there's enough room in the basement workshop or garage to comfortably house the saw and stand, leaving room to manoeuvre lengths of lumber or large sheets of wood to and from the saw. If not, the saw is likely to sit unused in a space too small. Christmas tree test When you are selecting your special, live Christmas tree, if needles fall off as you tap the tree trunk against the ground, it's too dry. After finding just the right tree for your family, saw about two inches off the bottom of the trunk, at a slant. Now it will have more surface to absorb water. Place the tree in a water -filled bucket, making sure to check it dai since the house heat easily evaporates ter faster than you think. Enjoy yourg agrant, living evergreen this Christmas.
