It's the thought that counts
Elderly the • gift of time
getting along in years and live alone. 1f your
gift is a dog, and you live nearby, you could
volunteer to take it for regular walks. Best
hold off the actual purchase of that appeal-
ing puppy or kitten until after Christmas
when the arrival is less traumatic for the
animal.
• If money is no object, consider a new TV
perhaps with remote control or a VCR at-
tachment. When you can't spend time with
them, it will be something they'll fondly
remember you by.
But never underestimate the gift that
costs nothing. Giving of yourself.
It really is the thought that counts when
you shop for older people.
The best gift of all may be giving of
yourself and your time. In doing so, you'll
probably find you've recaptured the true
spirit of Christmas for yourself as well as
others.
To get you going here are some
suggestions.
• Offer to shovel the driveway this winter
and mow the lawn come summer. Write
down your promise inside a traditional
Christmas card.
• Send a formal invitation to a dinner out for
a specific date. They'll love the idea even it
it's only to your nearest hamburger
restaurant.
• Arrange for a delivery of flowers on a
regular basis. About $15 a delivery should do
it, and florists are happy to oblige.
• Offer to do their grocery shopping once a
month or drive them to the supermarket.
• Make a commitment to take them on an
outing, say once a month.
• Drop the kids off at the grandparents
house once a month for a visit on their own.
Old and young generations really enjoy one
another on a one-to-one basis.
• A collage of snapshots of the family and
photos of family get-togethers costs little
and goes over big. It's something you or the
youngsters can put together yourselves.
• Gifts like a new fishing rod for him or a
needlepoint set for her are always welepme.
Or how about a,visit to a beauty salon for her
or books on sports for him?
• If this is your year for the big splurge, you
can send them to Florida.
• If they are homebodies, they might like a
gift of a pet — a dog, cat or for apartment
dwellers, a canary or exotic fish. More and
more, society is coming to realize the
therapeutic value of pets for people who are
