marks Hanukkah
In addition to Christmas, there are other
holidays which are celebrated during the
winter. One of them is Hanukkah, or the
Festival of Lights.
It usually arrives almost concurrently
with Christmas and is celebrated by people
of the Jewish faith.
It is a joyous holiday commemorating the
rededication of the Temple by Judas Mac-
cabeus in 165 S.C.
The miracle of Hanukkah is light.
Only one day's supply of oil remained to
the Hebrews and, by divine grace, burned
for eight days.
In ancient tradition, gifts were exchanged
every night of the holiday. This custom has
• changed somewhat over the years and
many people celebrate by exchanging one
gift during the eight day holiday.
The Festival of Hanukkah is symbolized
by the Menorah or nine pronged candelabra.
The ninth candle, or shammus, is lit every
night and is used to light each of the remain-
ing candles.
The candles increase by one every day of
the holiday. On the eighth day, all of the
candles are lit bringing to conclusion the
Festival of Lights.
