emergency procedures
CLINTON - You - a local patient of a
local doctor - for some reason, which makes
perfectly good sense to you, go to the Clinton
Public Hospital (CPH) without any prior ar-
rangements having been made. Perhaps
you have had an accident of some kind.
Perhaps your child has been injured at
school., In any. case - you have entered the
emergency department unannounced.
As part of the registration procedure, you
will be asked to identify your family doctor.
The highly trained and competent emergen-
cy nurse on duty, will see and evaluate your
emergency. Having identified your doctor,
unless your emergency is critical, . your
treatment will be placed in his hands if he is
available. He will talk to the emergency
nurse and will assign some sort of priority to
your situation. Maybe it warrants that he
drop everything an(1l"see you at the hospital
as soon as he can get there. Maybe he will
arrange for another doctor to see you very
soon, but it is entirely possible that he will
ask that x-rays be taken, or some other
diagnostic procedure be undertaken and he
will come to the hospital when he has finish-
ed with his office patients; or he may ask
you to come to his office. You can be certain
that your emergency health problem is
receiving prompt attention and is receiving
the consideration it warrants.
Certainly, the best interests of the patient
are • served when the family doctor i
available and is called in on the emergenc
at the earliest possible time. After all, your
family doctor knows you and your medical
history, thus is able to give you the highest
quality care. If you are a stranger in Clin-
ton, or if your doctor is not available, all the
above will take place, but the doctor on call
will take charge of your emergency. In very
serious emergencies, when life is threaten-
ed, all the stops are pulled and help will be
available as soon as it can possibly be
obtained.
One must realize that in Clinton and in-
deed in almost all hospitals outside larger
cities, there is not a doctor in the emergency
department of the hospital at all times.
However, a doctor is on call.
So when you go to CPH as an emergency
patient - you may be an out patient of your
doctor. In any case, be assured that your
"emergency" will be taken seriously and
treated appropriately by the health care
professionals of your hospital using the ex -
"Nit facilities available.
Road construction increased
Provincial contributions for municipal
road construction and maintenance will be
increased to $568.9 million next year, On-
tario Minister of Transportation and Com-
munications Ed Fulton said recently.
"This represents a 4.6 per cent increase,"
said Fulton.
"In addition, my ministry will retain its
