Bantams battle to tie with St. Marys The Clinton Bantam's second team fought a hard battle against St. Marys last week, ending up with a 6-6 tie. In net for Clinton was Chris Hoggarth. Clinton's first goal was scored by Greg Taylor on assists from Craig Caldwell and Darren McAsh. St. Marys came back with the next goal, tieing up the game at one apiece. Chris Caldwell came up with an unassisted goal for Clinton's second, giving the Bantams a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. Less than a minute into the second period Darren McAsh put one away to give Clinton a two goal lead. Assisting on the goal was Greg Taylor. Scott McAsh was the next player to pop one in for Clinton on assists from Paul Caldwell and Jason Wilson. Thirteen seconds later Greg Taylor got his second DON'T GET CAUGHT WITH YOUR SLED DOWN! With only nine seconds gone in the third period Craig Caldwell widened Clinton's lead with his second goal of the game. Jason Wilson and Greg Taylor got the assists. However, Clinton's lead did not stand, and St. Marys scored three more quick goals to tie up the game at 6-6. Playing goal for the second team Ban- tams this year is Chris Hoggarth and his backup is Danny Dupee. The rest of the team is made up of Craig Caldwell, Dave Jones, Greg Taylor, Paul Caldwell, Darren McAsh, Scott McAsh, Jason Wilson, Brad Jewitt, Chris Johnson, Jeff DeRuyter and Lee Norman. There are two reasons forthis change. Number one is that when I said last week that I would write about the Leafs they were in the middle of a winning streak, but unfortunately this streak was broken. This is not to say I have, given up faith in the team, I just thought I'd wait until they were back on the winning track, The second reason for the change is that I would rather write about the Canadian Football. League (CFL) this week. The hockey season has just started, but the CFL playoffs are about to begin. There should be some interesting match - ups in the playoffs this year, especially with Toronto playing two back to back, total -points games against the Hamilton Tiger -Cats. With the Argos' 37-16 win over the Mon- treal Alouettes last Sunday they regained first place. It seems these two eastern teams ( Toronto and Hamilton) have been battling back and forth for this position for a large part of the season. The important thing is, though, that the Argos will have home field advantage for the last game of this two game series. I got a chance to see the Argos in action on television for their final regular season game, and to say the least, I was, impressed. Lately, they seemed to be stumbling through their games, even though they were winning. This definitely was not the case on Sunday. From the opening kickoff things were looking good for my favorite team. Dwight Edwards, in his first game in the CFL since returning, brought the kickoff back 59 yards .to the. Montreal 35. For the major part of the football season Edwards had been playing for the Mississauga Raiders where he was a star player, but he just recently got the call from the Argos to return kicks. It was great to see he can still play the game in the professional leagues. Aside from Edwards, there were some other pleasing aspects about the game, one of which was the Argo quarterback J.C. Watts. Watts was playing with the confidence I was fairly sure he had lost. He passed for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Watts also showed some great scrambling mobility which, unfortunately, Conredge Holloway no longer has. The Argos also proved that they have a bit of a running game. They were sadly lacking in this department for most of the season, making it much easier on their op- ponents as they only had to worry about the pass. One gentleman that can take a lot of credit for opening up the Argo running game is William Miller. He ran for 119 yards and one touchdown. The funny thing about this is that although I am an Argo fan, I had never heard of Miller. Hopefully I'll be hearing much more from him in the playoffs. Reading the daily newspapers I noticed that the Argos were doing a lot of talking on how this win boosted their confidence. It had better be a big boost though, because they are going to have their hands full with the Ti -Cats. Now, for the final winner of the two game series, I will have to pick the Argos. Aside from the fact that they are my favorite team, I would also pick them because with a bit of a running game they can mix up their plays and (I think) beat the Ti -Cats. I just wish I could see the games, but they will both be blacked out. It should stir up a lot of excitement down in the Toronto - Hamilton area thoagh. because these teams have been rivalsfor years now, 'and a total -points series could make it very interesting. In the west, I can't even guess who might end up in ,;'he Grey Cup. As I don't like either Edmonton or British Columbia (the two top teams) I'm hoping they will be eliminated. I would have to say that Winnipeg has a fair to good chance of beating the, B.C. Lions as these teams have been battling for second for awhile, with B.C. finally grabbing it last week. However, I don't think the Calgary Stampeders have that great of a chance against Edmonton. So, what does that leave us with for the Grey Cup game? What I would like to see is Toronto and Winnipeg, but Toronto and anyone will be all right. (I'm keeping my fingers crossed) Hockey Schedules The Clinton Junior "D" Mustangs have three home games left in November. They play Thamesford on November 14, Lucan on November 21 and Exeter on November 23. On the minor hockey side' of things the Clinton Bantam Classics will play Elma Logan at 8:30 p.m. on November 13. On November 15 there is a full day of minor hockey to be played, The Pee. Wee Punkers will play Huron Park at 1 p.m., the Mites will meet Hensall at 2:15, the Novice Tier II team will battle Huron Park at 3:25 and the Bantam B team will host Goderich at 6:45.
