they heed the following suggestions:
• Remember all the basic crime prevention
tips you already know about, but may
overlook in the excitement of going away:
be sure the doors and windows and sliding
doors are properly secured. Change locks if
keys have been lost or stolen.
• Check with your insurance agent with
regard to home checks while your house is
Ltnoccupied. You may not be covered if your
home has not been visited while you are
away on vacation.
• Whether you are going away for just a day
or two, or for a longer period, use automatic
timers to turn lights and radios on and off
and give your house an occupied
appearance.
• Leave a door key with a trusted neighbor,
as well as a key to the burglar alarm system
if you have one.
• Ask for the free loan of an electric engrav-
ing pencil or buy one at your local hardware
store and mark your valuables and movable
property with your driver's licence or social
insurance number so they can be easily
identified.
• Notify your neighbor about how long you
expect to be away and tell them about any
people who may be visiting your house while
you are away.
• Have a neighbor pick up the mail,
newspapers and the advertising flyers
which inevitably pile uP even in a few days.
• Arrange to have your snow shovelled.
Then you won't even have to think snow
while you are away.
• Consider a house sitter.
