Hockey season
This week I would like to venture into
some uncharted (at least for me) ter-
ritory, and try to keep this column strictly
on the subject of hockey.
Since the Toronto Maple Leafs, formerly
the Toronto Maple Laughs, have kicked off
their season on such a good note, and since
winter is fast approaching, I guess it is on-
ly right to finally write a hockey column.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of hockey
is fairly limited as I only played about half
a season when I was eight years old, but
here goes.
First, a short update on the Clinton
Junior "D" Mustangs whose record now
stands at four wins, six losses and a tie.
The Mustangs split their games this
weekend, beating Seaforth 7-3 on Friday
and losing 5-4 to Mitchell on Sunday.
In their Seaforth game the Mustangs
went ahead early, leading 3-0 by the end of
the first period. Scoring for Clinton in the
first period were Devon Colquhoun, Dar-
ren Moir and Brian Dupuis.
By the end of the second period Clinton
lead 5-2 on goals by Travis Lyndon and
Scott Gilders.
Mark Laporte and Bob Dupee rounded
out the Mustangs' scoring in the third
I period. d,
Clinton's loss on Sunday had to have
been a hard one as they tied the game with
less than a minute left in the third period,
only to see Mitchell score their winning
goal with three seconds left.
The Mustangs fell behind early in the
first period. when Mitchell scored a power
play goal with Wayne Smith off for
interference.
With Dean Armstrong scoring for the
Mustangs on.passes from Randy Marriage
and Ron McKay, they tied the game with
7:21 gone in the second period.
However, Mitchell regained their lead
on a short handed goal with just over 10
minutes gone in the second, but Clinton's
Rob Stanfield once again tied up the game
less than a minute later on a power play
goal. Bob Dupee assisted on the goal.
Later in the second period, with Devon
Colquhoun off for hooking, Mitchell scored
their second power play goal to go ahead
3-2.
Dean Armstrong scored his second goal
.of the game to tie it up with 5:25 gone in the
third period on a power play pass from
Randy Marriage.
Mitchell, not to be shown up, retained
their lead less than six minutes later, but
Bandy Marriage once again tied up the
game with 21 seconds left in the game.
Assisting on this Mustang goal were Dean
Armstrong and Ron McKay.
Unfortunately, this goal did not stand
and Mitchell got the win in the final

seconds.
For the game Clinton ran up 20 penalty
minutes, and their goalie, Derek Gliders,
faced 37 shots. Mitchell's goaltender,
Steve. Stapleton; faced 50 Clinton shots
while the rest of his team racked up 28
minutes worth of penalties.
The following is a listing of the 10
Mustangs with the highest points gained as.
of November 3, as well as the goaltenders'
averages.
Because my short Mustangs' update
turned into a long one, and since the listing
will take up the rest of my space, I will
save the Leafs for next week. Hopefully9
they will still be doing well by then.

Junior girls advance to semi-finals
On October 28 the junior girls' basketball
team from Central Huron Secondary School
(CHSS) travelled to Listowel to play a
quarter -final game.
Farber in the season the junior Redmen
had lost to Listowel by 30. points, but this was
not to be the case for the quarter -finals as
CHSS won 31-29.
Playing in front of a packed gym of ap-
proximately 150 Listowel fans, the Redmen
shut down the top Listowel scorers.
With only three seconds left in a tied game
Clinton's Lori Leibold scored the winning
basket.
Top scorers for CHSS ' were Susan
Govenlock with eight points and Kathleen
Verhoef with 10.
With this win the juniors now move into
semi-final play where they will meet this
season's top finishers, Stratford
Northwestern.
The juniors finished their regular season
with five wins and five losses which placed
them' in fifth position out of 11 teams, and
qualified them for the playoffs.
During the regular season Susan
Govenlock was the top scorer with 78 points,
followed by Kathleen Verhoef with 64 points.

Atoms gain
two shutout
victories
On October 28 in Clinton, the Clinton
Atoms blanked the Howick Hawk Atoms by
3-0.
It was the second straight shutout turned
in by the dynamic duo of Derek Hoggarth
and David Nahrgang in net.
The Clinton defence consisting of Jeff
Oesch, Tyler McGregor, Scott Shaddick,
Scott Wright, Bryan Watson and Shane
McDonald again turned in a strong checking
game inside their own blue line.
Chris Kennedy gave Clinton- a 1-0 in the
first period at the 7:122'mai*. "'Danny
Wildfong earned an assist on the goal.
In the second period Danny . Wildfong's
pass out from the corner found Nathan
Burns all
alone in front of net where he
quickly deposited the puck into the cage.
With 2:22 left in the period a.two on one
break with Mark Livermore feeding an ex-
cellent headlong pass to Nathan Burns
made it 3-0. It was Burn's fourth goal of the
season.
In Seaforth on November 1 the Clinton
Atoms ran their unbeaten streak to five
games as they coasted to an impressive 9-0
win against Seaforth.

Mark Livermore led the assault with four
goals. Danny Wildfong and Lee Gibbings
chipped in with two goals apiece.
A rare penalty shot occurred in the con-
test as a result of a Seaforth defenceman
falling on the puck in the goal crease. Shane
MacDonald was given the opportunity on
the penalty shot and he made no mistake as
he drilled a hard assist shot high into the left
corner.
The game produced some excellent play-
making
la -making by the Clinton boys as many of the
goals were produced by some beautiful
passing plays.
Leading the playmakers was Chris Ken-
nedy with three assists, while Nathan
Burns, Danny Wildfong, Lee Gibbings, Jeff
Oesch and Shane MacDonald had two
assests each. Scott Wright and Greg McAsh.
each gathered one point. '
