To begin with, it will be my last oppor- tunity because the CHSS Redmen were defeated 14-8 in the game that was played in Goderich. Although they lost in semi-final play, I think the Redmen have a lot to be proud of. It isn't every team that can advance this far in the season when itis their first year ' playing together, and the first time many of the students have played football. I,, for one, played on at least two teams that had a large number of experienced players but went for a full season without a' win. It's funny, you can have almost as much fun when you don't win a game as when you win them all because there is no pressure to do well, and you can just have fun. But, back to the Redmen. Unfortunately, I was unable to stay for the whole game, but of the three quarters I was there I saw the Redmen defence go from letting the Vikings run any play they want and gain yardage to stopping Goderich in their tracks. Relying mainly on their ground game the Vikings ran up a 14-0 score on touchdowns late in the first quarter and early in the second. Following this early trampling, Clinton's defence decided to play ball and pushed Goderich ,back to their own five yard line. On third down the Vikings made a horrible offensive error and the Redmen capitaliz= ed on it. This error ocurred when they tried to punt from their end zone and had it block- ed. Clinton's Richard Lyndon jumped on the ball to give the "Redmen their only touchdown of the game. Quarterback Mur- ray Bechtel ran the ball around the end for the two point conversion. - The worst thing about this Goderich er- These two young men gave it their all when they participated in the two kilometre run at Hullett Central School on October 22. Eight schools competed in this Huron County Cen- tral Cross Country Meet. (David Emslie photo) ror was that a football player didn't block the punt, the goal posts did. (At•least that's how it looked from my viewpoint, but don't quote me on that.) Following this comedy of errors both teams played very strong defensive games throughout the second half, and as a result neither team was able to get into the end - zone, leaving the final score at 14-8. . Now, here is where my story varies from that of Mr. Hillier. His story mentioned the fact that all of the Redmen wanted to thank their many fans for all of their sup- port. However, prior to receiving this story I had made a note to myself for this col- umn titled, "Where are the fans?" My reason for asking this question was that the loudest, and possibly the only cheers,I heard for the Redmen at the semi- final game came from a few gathered parents. While talking to these parents at half- time I asked why the students weren't let out early to attend the game, or if a bus for fans was sent from the school. I learned that for one of the Redmen home games all of the students were let out early but only a small amount (I was told 15, but this sounds too low) came out and the rest went home. When I was playing ball in high school they sent at least one busload of fans to every regular season away game and two or three to playoff games. So, where are the fans? I have heard so much about the rivalry between these schools, but if it's supposed to be such a big rivalry, who carries it out? Just the players? That's enough complaining for now, I just feel that this team deserved any sup- port they could get. Perhaps next year in- terest in this sport will be on.the rise again at CHSS so they can have both a senior and a junior team. Maybe this will bring the fans out. I hope so. While on the subject of rivalry I would like to point out that there is a difference between rivalry and ignorance. Some Goderich fans seemed unable to i BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORY Phone: 48.2-7741 GLASS/ALUMINUM See us for your building projects • Glass and Mirrors • Energy Efficient Replacement Windows • Seamless Eavestroughing • Complete range of Aluminum or Vinyl Siding and Building Products • Window and Screen Repairs • Door Service and Repairs COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL clinton GLT&310 mirror and aluminum products 24 Princess St. West, CLINTON 482-3322 FARM PatZ SALES and SERVICE installation and Parts KEITH SIEMON FARM SYSTEMS LTD. Right at the end of the first half a Clinton player was 'injured, and from the sidelines it looked very serious. It was in fact serious enough to warrant calling an ambulance, and the player was very gently loaded onto a board before being put into the ambulance. Now, the first thing that comes to mind when such a board is brought out is a neck or back injury. For me, after playing ball for awhile, the thought that immediately pops into my mind (however horrible it is) is paralysis. This thought also came into the Goderich spectators' minds (or lack of them) and at this point ignorance took over for rivalry. The last thing a person needs when they are injured is mockery, but that is what this player received. "You'll never walk again,. boy," was the cry from an ignorant fan. With this player lying unmoving on the field for about 20 minutes, I don't think this fan could have slunk much lower with her comments if she tried. Fortunately, the injury was not as serious as it looked. The ridiculous thing about all of this is that in last week's Goderich Signal Star irate Viking fans wrote in to complain about how rude Exeter fans are. There were also two apologetic letters, one from the Exeter principal and one from the fans. I just hope these irate fans were near enough to my end of the.field to hear what the Goderich students are capable of when it comes to being rude. Mustangs This is just a little note to let the readers know that the Clinton Junior "D" Mustangs got back on the winning track this Sunday with an 8-2 win over Seaforth. • With the game tied at 1-1 after the first period, Clinton pulled ahead by 4-2 after two and finally 8-2.
