Soya -bean
growers
encouraged
by pledge
Representatives of the Ontario Soya -Bean
Growers' Marketing Board were very en-
couraged by meetings with Agriculture
Minister John Wise and Wheat Board
Minister Charles Mayer on October 15 and
16. The meetings were held to discuss the $1
billion in Federal Government assistance
which has been promised to Canadian
farmers and how a portion of it may be
allocated to soybean growers.
Mr. Wise clarified a number of concerns
re4arding the promised assistance stating
thatit will be.in the form of cash assistinee
to all oilseed and grain producers in
Canada. It will not be in the form of
repayable loans. The purpose of the pay-
ment will be to assist farmers who have
seen the prices of their commodities drop
sharply to unprofitable levels, due to the ef-
fects of the.agricultural trade war between
the United States and the European
Economic Community.
Maurice Waddick, Chairman of the On-
tario Soya -Bean Growers' Marketing Board
stated that the 'promised aid was "a sign
that the Federal Government is aware of the
financial problems facing farmers."
"One -billion dollars can't cure the pro-
blem, but it does give farmers some hope,"
stated Mr. Waddick. "To cure the problem,
the subsidy war between the US and the
EEC, has to stop, so farmers can get a fair
return for their commodities from the
marketplace."
The greatest obstacle to be overcome in
delivering the assistance to farmers, will be
to determine an equitable method of
dividing the payment among all oilseed and
grain producers. Mr. Wise indicated that the
producer groups will be called to Ottawa
again within three weeks, to develop a con-
sensus on how the funds should be
distributed.
Soybean growers would like to see thalk
payment made through the Agriculture
Stabilization Board, by the end of 1986..

Deer tags issued
The Ontario Ministry of Natu
Resources has issued 50,996 antlerless d
validation tags for the 1986 hunting season -
a 39 per cent increase over last year. Suc-
cessful applicants of the draw Will receive
,their tags in the mail by late September.
The seven-year-old selective harvest pro-
gram is designed to control deer harvetted
by allocating a specific number of tags for
antlerless deer - females and fawns - in each
management unit.
"The large increase in the number of
validation tags we were able to allocate this
year is due to a healthy and increasing deer
population - a direct result of my ministry's
selective harvest program combined with a
number of mild winters," Ontario Natural
Resources Minister, Vincent Kerrio said.
This year, the Ministry received 73,,736 ap-
plications - an increase of nine' per cent over
1985.
Hunters who have questions about the
selective deer harvest program should con.
tact their local Natural Resources office.
