Mustang news
It's that time of the week again, when I
try to bring the readers a little bit of local
sports news, and probably for this week, a
whole lot of national, or international news
in my own words.
To begin with, the Clinton Junior "D"
Mustangs hockey team are down to team
roster size, and they began their regular
season over the past weekend with one loss
and one win.
On Friday night they met one of last
year's top teams, Seaforth. Mustang
manager Bryan ,Marriage noted that once
again this year Seaforth has a good, big
team.
This was evident to the Mustangs by the
end of the game, as they were defeated by
a score of 11-5.
Mr. Marriage blamed the high Score on
the Mustang's goal tending being a little
shaky, or as he put it, "the opening night
jitters."
Jitters or not, Clinton held their own un-
til the end of the first period when the score
stood at only 3-2 in Seaforth's favor.
However, things started going downhill
after that, as the score at the end of the se-
cond period was a horrible 10-5 for
Seaforth. Mr. Marriage said of the second
period, "That's the period that killed us,
by the way."
In the third period Seaforth only manag-
ed one goal while Clinton was shut out.
Scoring for Clinton were Robert Dupee,
Ron McKay, Dean Armstrong and Bob
Stanfield.
Mr. Marriage noted that as yet there are
no real stand outs on the team.
Sunday's game against Thedford proved
to be a bit more satisfying for the team, as
they defeated Thedford 3-1.
Marty Merner was one player Mr. Mar-
riage mentioned as playing a strong game.
"Marty had a good game, he lost his shut
out with four minutes left in the game."
"We outplayed them badly," Mr. Mar-
riage continued. "We should have scored
six or seven goals rather than three: we
had a lot of chances."
Last year. in competition with Thedford
the Mustangs were one and one, winning
one game 6-5 and losing another 6-5.
Those who scored for Clinton in the
Thedford game were Randy Marriage,
Dean Armstrong and Mark LaPorte.
This coming weekend the Mustangs
meet Mitchell on Friday and Belmont on
Saturday.
Looking ahead to the Mitchell game, Mr.
Marriage said, "Last year Mitchell finish-
ed in the cellar, but they are a vastly im-
proved team this year."
The Belmont game could prove to give
the Mustangs a bit of difficulty as Belmont
finished near the top in last year's stan-
ding, and seem to be on the right track this
year.
In fact, last week Belmont managed to
defeat the team that slaughtered the
Mustangs this week, namely, Seaforth.
"We should have our hands full Saturday
night," Mr. Marriage said.
International scene
Although most people I know couldn't
care less about what is happening in the
Canadian Football League (CFL), I still
( for some reason) find it a bit more in-
teresting than the National Football
League (NFL).
Maybe it is because I was born and bred
with the CFL, or perhaps it's because I
don't think any team really needs four at-
tempts to travel 10 yards or metres.
I think 1 feel this way because with only
three downs, it seems to make the game
more of a challenge. Also. you know when
you are watching the CFL that if a team
doesn't make good yardage 'on their first
down with a running play, they will have to
pass, which is always more exciting than a
run.
Anyways, more interesting or not, the
CFL is (already) getting close to being
finished for the Season.
You can pretty well write off Montreal
and Ottawa for this season, as each team
only has six points.
That only leaves, Toronto and Hamilton
in the eastern division, and as far as I'm
concerned, you could almost write them
off also.
Toronto has a grand total of 14 points
with Hamilton breathing down their necks
with 13. The ridiculous thing is, the team
that is in second last place in the west,
Calgary, had more points than the eastern
first place Argos. Calgary has 16.
I know in my earlier columns I frequent-
ly praised the Argos, but there isn't much I
can say now, except negative things.
Something that has been driving me in-
sane while watching or listening to their
games recently is the way they have
managed to throw games away with tur-
novers. If Conredge Holloway or J.C.
Watts aren't assisting the opposition by
throwing interceptions, then someone is
sure to comne along and fumble the ball
away.
Therefore, unless you can fumble your
way to the Grey Cup, no teams in the west
have anything to worry about from (still
my favorites) the Toronto Argonauts.
The junior boys volleyball team from Central Huron Secondary School were winners at a
Madill tournament en September 20. In the back row, from left to right, they are Coach
Peter Zankowski, Craig Lockhart, Mike Corrie, Josh Feltham, Jeff Roy and Derek Jef-
ferson. Front row, left to right, Craig Bauman, Boun Racksasouk, Rick Lobb, Hung
Luong and Dean Martin. Missing from the photo were Mike Strickland and Devon Col-
quhoun. (Travis Lyndon photo)

match, and split their games for the second
time this year, by 15-10 and 8-15 scores. This
evens the record for the Redmen this year at
6-6.
Honorable mention for their fine play last
week goes to Ron McKay and Jeff Lyon for
their efforts at setting the ball effectively
and to Darin McKenzie and Shawn Lester
who led the offense.
The Junior .Redmen also played hosts to a
tournament on October 1, and came out on
top in all of their games.
The juniors were never really challenged
as they swept all six of their games, •
defeating Seaforth 15-4 and 15-2; South
Huron 15-4 and 15-9 and St. Marys 15-2 and
