' NES AY, OCTOBER 1., 19114 Dave Echlin told an- audience in Clinton recently that retirement is something that should be planned for well in advance. Mr. Echlin is a retirement planning instructor. ( Shelley McPhee-Haist photo ) PLANNING YOUR RETIREMENT Health maintenance tips for retirement Goodliealth is essential to enjoying a good retirement. Here is a checklilst of health maintenance tips, extracted from "Retiure- ment Can Be Your Best Years", Len Douse; published by the Ministry of Indian and Nor- thern Affairs. •We can remember to consult a doctor when signs appear that there may be something wrong with us. Then, follow the doctor's in- structions and take whatever medication or treatment Is prescribed. •We can have periodic medical check-ups, more often as we grow older and feel our physical condition deteriorating. •We can try to keep our weight down to -what the charts show they should be for our age, structure and height. This means sensible eating, not overeating. It also means eating nutritious foods and making sure that we eat a balanced diet, with sufficient, but not more, of all the necessary vitamins. A word of caution here though; do not go on a "crash" starvation diet or system of weight - reducing exercises or treatments without first consulting your doctor or -you may do yourself more harm than good. •We can exercise regularly. Walking, almost a lost habit in these days of cars, can be beneficial. Two to four miles of brisk walking each day can be helpful, assuming, of course, that one's heart is sound. Cycling can provide a great deal of relaxing pleasure as well as useful exercise. It is sug- gested that before undertaking any form of special exercise, calisthenics or fitness pro- gram, you make sure through your doctor that there are no physical reasons why you should not exercise. •We can reduce, or better still, eliminate smoking. Common sense dictates such ac- tion. Inhaling cigarette smoke can be harmful. •We can take action to keep our teeth healthy by regular check- ups by our den- tist, or if we use dentures, we can make sure they always fit properly. Relining should be done when needed. •We can take care of our eyes and eyesight by visits to an ophthalmologist if we have eye trouble or failing eyesight. We must make sure our eyeglasses provide the best sight possible. •We can take care of our ears, and if our hearing begins to fail, have them examined by a specialist. Do not buy a hearing aid before consulting a medical specialist. •We can ensure that we get adequate rest and sleep. Only we know how much sleep we need to keep healthy and avoid fatigue. •We can try to avoid worry by not creating unnecessary problems such as living beyond our means or becoming emotionally involved in situations or issues which can only lead to frustrations. Think of the causes of worry which you have experienced in the past and try to avoid them in the future. •We can keep our minds active and alert, by involvements, interests, challenges and mental activity. •We can try to avoid unnecessary physical and mental stresses and strains. oohs that may he1p with your planning Dave Echlin, retirement counsellor has listed a selection of books that may help you with your future plans.
