This local football story will center on the recent activities of the Central Huron Secondary School Junior Redmen. I had the opportunity last week to attend the game between the Redmen and the Stratford North Western Huskies, and while I'll admit I was a bit skeptical of the Redmen`s chances when. I saw them in preseason play, I left that game thoroughly impressed. • Clinton opened the scoring early in the game with a long march down the field that was topped off with a touchdown by Steve Van Den Dool. Later in the first half the Redmen sur- prised me by using a little razzle dazzle to score their second touchdown. With Jeremy Ten Hag taking the ball around the end for a fake sweep which pulled all of the Huskies' defense up to stop the run, Jeremy through a pass to Daryl Hem- ingway who was standing alone in the end zone. Murray Bechtel, the quarterback for CHSS, accounted for both touchdowns in the second half when he ran the ball in. Dan McDougal carried twice for two two- point conversions and Jason Turner kicked a single point conversion to round out the Redmen scoring. The Redmen defense also played a tough game, holding the Huskies . to only tWo touchdowns. Their defense consisted primarily of stopping the Huskies' sweeps around both ends. By the end of the game the score stood at a crushing 29-12 w Clinton's favour, giving the Redmen a two win and no loss record. Their next battle should prove to be an interesting, one as they will meet the powerful Vikings from Goderich on Oc- tober 2. Volleyball Things are also looking good for the junior volleyball team at CHSS, coming off a win at a Madill tournament on September 20. Coach Peter Zankowski granted me an interview this week, and he told me of his hopes for the team, and about some of the team's strongest players. Although it is his first year of coaching junior boys' volleyball, he has had 10 years of coaching at CHSS and other schools. One of these coaching jobs included one at South Huron Secondary School for girls volleyball. After the team came second in Huron - Perth last year, and fifth overall for the Western Ontario Secondary School Association, Mr. Zankowski said, "We have good prospects for this year. I figure we'll make the playoffs, the top six teams make the playoffs." He said the team should once again be strong this year as a number of players are in their last year of elegibility, and thus have experience playing the game. Some of the players he mentioned as put- ting in specially strong performances are the team's spiker Jeff Roy and their setter Craig Bauman. However, Mr. Zankowski noted that other players, such as Mike Cor- rie and Mike Strickland are strengthening as they play. "We have a number of good potentials," the coach said. Because of the overlapping schedule of junior football, there weren't as many players out for the team this year, with on- ly 14 or 15 trying out. This shortage meant Mr. Zankowski did not nave to cut any players, although some left the team on their own. "They cut themselves," he said. He add- ed that the players cutting themselves was easier than last year when he coached soc- cer and he had to make cuts. The junior boys, whose season began last week following practices that started in the first week of school, are entered in five tournaments, which will give them 30 games played in total. They will be hosting a tournament today (October 1) at CHSS. Also on October 1 the senior boys volleyball team will also be hosting a tour-, nament, but their coach, Keith Allen, doesn't see as bright a future for the seniors. • After finishing seventh last year, and thus missing the playoffs by one spot, Mr. Allen said most of his players are back, which should mean they are a strong team. Unfortunately though, many of the ogler teams also have their players back. "There is no weak team really," Mr. Allen said. He added that their goal for this year is to make the playoffs. Mustangs The Clinton Junior "D" Mustangs will be kicking off their home schedule on October 3 when they host Seaforth. Other home games for the month of Oc- tober included games against Mount Brydges on October 17, Seaforth on Oc- tober 18, Exeter on October 19, Mitchell on October 24 and Seaforth on October 26. Pee Wees win tournament CLINTON - After a month lay-off the Pee Wee girls were still eager to play ball, and on September 20, the games of the tourna- ment were played in Clinton is anything but good conditions. The results of round one showed Goderich Township beating Goderich 2, Goderich 1 outscoring Colborne, Stanley defeating Hullett 1 and Clinton beating Hullett 2. After these games the "B" side teams played, and in these games Colborne defeated Goderich 2, and Hullett 2 outscored Hullett i. This left Hullett 2 and Colborne to play for the consolation trophy, and Hullett 2 were victorious. In the "A" series Goderich 1 defeated Goderich Township and Clinton beat Stanley. The final "A" championship game was played between Clinton and Goderich 1, and Clinton were the championship trophy winners. A special thank you goes out to all of the coaches and umpires for their time. FACTORY AUTHORIZED CLEARANCE Sale Oct. 2Kd 6 pm SALE All 1986 Mazda's Must Be Sold! CHSS juniors win volleyball tournament - By Dawn Hunking On September 20 the Junior Redmen took part in volleyball tournament at Madill. After winningfive of their seven games the Redmen defeated South Huron two games to one in the semi-finals. This advanced them against a powerful squad from Stratford Central in the cham- pionship round. The Redmen lost their first game 15-4 but rallied to win the second game 15-7. This set the stage for a classic showdown with everything riding on the third game. Behind the pinpoint setting of Craig Bauman and a dazzling offence sparked by the spiking of eaptain Jeff Roy, the Central Huron Junior ftechnen defeated the Strat- ford Central Rai\iblers by a close 15-13 score to capture the championship. Special mentidn should be made of the other four player ,who turned in a supreme effort against the Ramblers in the cham- pionship match. These four are Josh Feltham, Derek Jefferson, Mike Corrie and Boun Racksasouk.
