Women Today to sponsor workshop in Blyth for nurses
In the area of professional development
for nurses there are numerous courses,
clinical days and seminars. For many
nurses,these educational days seem quite
removed from the reality of their work ex-
perienCe. Being employed in highly
technical and under -staffed units, nurses
are left feeling frustrated, unappreciated,
and overworked. Nursing is a profession
that is forever changing, and, in order to
cope with those changes, nurses, as profes-
sionals, need time for personal growth and
development.
There are new ways to examine and solve
old problems. Women Today would like to
extend to all nurses a personal invitation to
attend and participate in an innovative
workshop. "NORMAL VALUES/VITAL
SIGNS".
New vaccine for foxes to be tested
The Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources will begin immunizing wild foxes
with a new vaccine this September, as part
of an ongoing strategy to control the spread
of rabies in rural areas.
Ministry aircraft will drop 15,300 baits —
liver and hamburger coated sponge cubes
containing a strengthened, liquid rabies
vaccine — in an "'/Pea bounded by the
ownships of Hullet, Goderich, Stanley, Col-
rne, and Tuckersmith near the towns of
oderich and Clinton.
The area — which has been used in
similar trials for the last two years — will be
expanded this year to include McKillop
township near the town of Seaforth.
"We have done two previous field tests,"
said Natural Resources Minister Vincent
Kerrio. "One test examined this method of
delivering the baits without using the vac-
cine. It showed that the method works — two
out of three foxes will eat the baits.
"Vaccine was used in the second test, but
fox blood samples indicated that it was not
as effective as we anticipated. Rabies im-
mune antibodies were present in about rive
per cent of the foxes. That is why we must
try for better results this year with this
stronger, longer -lasting vaccine."
Check your
chimney now
1110 A blocked chimney or malfunctioning fur-
nace can kill, say fuel safety experts.
Ontario residents are being warned to en-
sure their home heating systems are
operating properly before turning on the
furnace for the first time this season.
"Have the whole system inspected,
especially if you haven't already done so
this year," advised Monte Kwinter,
Minister of Consumer and Commercial
Relations. •'A simple professional check at
least once a each year can help avoid
tragedy."
Illness and death have occured when faul-
ty heating systems produced carbon monox-
ide that backed up into homes because of
blockage in the chimneys. Homeowners who
have had their heating systems converted to
natural gas may have to get metal chimney
liners installed if the bricks are crumbling
or show signs of staining due to moisture
condensation.
• T.-,PelgA s tgadr11114 3g-gar-
poration (Cr i
blames malfunctioning
heating systems for about 25 carbon
monoxide -related deaths in Canada every
year. During the past year the Fuels Safety
Branch of MCCR has investigated 31 carbon
monoxide -related incidents in Ontario, in-
volving one death.
Carbon monoxide - a colorless odorless
gas - can leak into homes for a variety of
reasons. Aside from blocked chimneys,
cracks,in furnace heat exchangers can also
be the culprits. On certain types of boilers
the heat exchanger surface may become
clogged with debris. These and other
physical problems should show up during
regular inspections. Do not use your furnace
until any necessary repairs have been
completed.
Fuels Safety Branch Director, Bob Clen-
dining warns that a problem known as back
drafting can also occur even if there are no
physical faults in the furnace or chimney.
Back drafting is the reversal of air flow
through the venting system. In tightly seal-
ed homes, air can be drawn down the
chimney, through the furnace and into the
house when the fireplace, kitchen fan, cen-
tral vacuum cleaner or other air -exhausting
appliances are operated. If the furnace is
running, exhaust gases may be prevented
from rising up the chimney and could be
spilled into the house. When recycled
through the burner, the waste gases form
deadly carbon monoxide.
"Back drafting can be caused by exhaust
ns, fires in a fireplace or a combination of
ings that are exhausting a lot of air from
the house," Clendining explains. "With to-
day's tightly sealed homes, when the de-
mand on the air supply is heavy it can only
be satisfied by drawing air through the
chimney. You can have problems if the fur-
- nace turns on - and cannot reverse the flow
again."
The symptoms of carbon monoxide
poisoning are dizziness, nausea, headaches
and weakness. If your family is experienc-
ing any of these signs, yet the annual fur-
nace inspection doesn't uncover any pro-
blems, back drafting could be the culprit.
Try opening a window when using the
fireplace or other appliances that use lots of
air, Clendining suggests, but if in doubt call
a qualified contractor.
Remember, homeowners are responsible
for seeing that their furnaces are properly
maintained.
The new vaccine, developed at Connaught
Laboraties in Toronto, is similar to a vac-
cine which has been field-tested with suc-
cess in Europe, It has shown 100 per cent
potential in laboratory tests, and is expected
to effectively retain its potency for three
weeks after it is dropped.
This is significantly better than last year's
vaccine which retained its potency for only
three days after it was dropped, and was
estimated to be 80 per cent effective in pro-
ducing rabies immune antibodies.
The vaccine used in this year's trial will
distribute around the mouth of the fox as it
chews the sponge, and then be absorbed into
its blood system, The sponge will be
smeared with liver and packed with ham-
burger to emit a pungent odor to attract the
animals faster.
"Local trappers will once again play an

Queen
"In The Heart Of Downtown Varna"
important role in this operation," Kerrio
said. "The bait drop has been timed to coin-
cide with fox trapping season - about mid-
October and mid November — so that we
can examine the fox blood samples local
trappers collect and determine how effec-
tive the new vaccine has been.
The vaccine has proven safe in the
laboratory should accidental contact occur
with pets or humans. It should not, however,
be considered an adequate immunizing
, agent if one of the baits is eaten by a pet.
The sponge smeared with liver will be
placed in a plastic bag with the hamburger.
The plastic bait bags are clearly marked
with a warning label. Residents are being
asked not to touch them. The baits will be
dropped away from human habitation — on
gravel pits, fields and along the edges of
woodlands.

This open workshop is being led by Cecille
O'Connor, a registered nurse and per-
former, and Lib Spry, director, actress,
writer, and workshop leader. At this point,
nurses will be provided with some
background information and an explanation
of how the workshop evolved.
"SCENARIO", a team of nursing and
theatrical professionals, decided, to develop
a musical play entitled "Good Day, No Com-
plaints", to communicate nurses' feelings
and concerns from a nurse's point of view.
While researching their play they realized
the enormous potential in utilizing theatre
techniques as a tool for nurses, and so the
workshop "NORMAL VALUES/VITAL
SIGNS" was born.
Acting skill is not a pre -requisite, and,
what each nurse is required to bring to the
workshop is her wealth of experience: feel-
ings, im i ges,, and stories. The workshop in-
troduces nurses to a process that uses
theatre techniques as a tool for coming to
terms with personal and professional issues.
In an open workshop format, participants
use verbal and non-verbal techniques to
define their problems and concerns as they
work together constructively towards
change. Come dressed comfortably, and be
prepared to stimulate thought and dialogue
in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.
"SCENARIO" has had a very positive
response to the workshops from the Ontario
Nurses Association, the Ontario College of
Registered Nursing Assistants, and the Col-
lege of Nurses of Ontario. They were chosen
to produce the closing presentation of the
RNAD convention held in May, 1986. The
Huron County workshop is extremely im-
portant to their overall goal to be truly
representative of all nurses in Ontario, in-
cluding small communities.
The workshop has been scheduled for
Saturday, September 27, in Blyth, from 9 am
to 5 pm. The fee is $25 including lunch, and
the number of participants is limited. We
hope that this advance notice will allow you
to make the necessary time available in
your busy schedule to attend.
Interested? All interested participants
should pre -register with a non-refundable
deposit of $15. When your pre -registration
arrives; you will immediately receive a let-
ter of confirmation including a tax deducti-
ble receipt and details of the workshop.
