WINGHAM - Ten board members attend-
ed the first meeting of Voice for Life for the
1986-87 season. The lineeting was opened
with prayer led by Jim Bakelaar, president.
The group will seek to purchase space at
the Teeswater Fair for an information
booth. Local people continue to picket the il-
legal Morgentaler and Scott abortion clinics
in Toronto. Members were asked to en-
courage others to join in the picketing.
Considerable discussion revolved around
Health Minister Murray Elston's naming
Dr. Marion Powell to look at how the pro-
vince can provide better access to abor-
tions. Dr. Powell, director of the Bay Centre
for Birth Control in Toronto (a centre which
does abortion referrals) has been actively
involved in organizing the movement for
abortion on demand from as far back as
1972. It would appear that she brings to this
investigation a firm bias for abortion on de-
mand. (The 1969 amendments to the

Criminal Code decriminalized abortion only
under certain strict circumstances -one of
which was that the health of the.mother is
threatened). The group strongly disap-
proves of Mr. Elston's action.
Education chairperson, Sally Campeau,
reported having spoken to Grades 7 and 8 in
two local elementary schools and to a
women's group in Wingham. The Silent
Scream and Abortion: How It Is were shown
at these presentations. Mrs. Campeau en-
couraged the group by telling them that they
had chosen well when they chose to serve
society through the pro-life movement.
"There are many injustices in our socie-
ty" she said, "but the greatest of these is the
killing of certain members, or& brothers
and sisters. The most basic right of man is
the right to life, upon which all other rights
depend. Keep up your efforts to defend the
dignity of man."
