If this season is anything like the last, this is a question o><xtle lips of Many people, and I think rightfully so. GOItig in the last stretch of the season, September,. the Jays are doing an amazing job ¢ftkeeping the heat on the Boston Red Sox; • I 'kit I admitted before that, P i not a great. asebalLfan, but Pin finding it im- possible not, to patch Blue Jay fever. Early this week the team tied their club record; by tinning their ninth straight game. `;Unfortunately this only kept them in the running with the Red Sox, as Boston is refueing to.give up their lead. Hopefully the Ja3is cavi keep up their winning ways, and BostOn .'will' give up theirs, • as a three and a half game lead can fall rather fast. X think a number of things have improv- ed in the organization to bring about this change. One would have to be their hitting. For starters, no other team in the erican League has as many batters hit - tin ,overi.300 as•the Jays. In this range for the Jays are Lee with a 33,31 average, Bell with .323, Fernandez witlli .315, Shepherd with .306, Leach with .305 and Barfield with .304. The next team to come even close to this goal are the Chicago White Sox with three batters hit-, ting over .300 and the Detroit Tigers, also with three hitting over the mark. Their pitching has also done somewhat of a turn around over the past while, with the team being lead by the likes of Eichhorn, Henke, Clancy and Key. Even Dave Stieb seems to be back on the winn- ing track, as his record has improved dramatically over the .past few weeks. They have also made a move to bolster their pitching staff a bit with the purchas- ing of the contract of Mickey Mahler from the Oklahoma City 89ers of the American CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1986—Page 13 Sport: greater things in the world of sports, or who are on their way. I think it may make this column more in- teresting, and definitely more local with everyone's help. Therefore, once again, any tips at all would be appreciated greatly, otherwise,. you could be reading about football, or even worse, me, in this space for some time to come. (I guess football will come to. end anyways, and hockey will then dominate this space) Flag Football Now that the balk hockey season has come to an end, the Clinton Recreation Department is interested in starting up another sport, flag football. Although recreation director Steve Campbell feels the season may not go through because of the early night fall, and lack of a lighted field, they are still in- terested in seeing if a league could be started. Mr. Campbell said they are looking at playing the games from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdaynights at Clinton Public School. If team interest is shown, or any in- dividuals are interested in playing some football, they should contact the recreation .office at 482-3398. Two of the ball hockey teams will be playing an exhibition football game to see if they can gain some interest and get the league going. Association. They have also called Duane Ward from the Syracuse Chiefs of the Internation League and Jeff Musselman from Knox- vil e of the AA Southern League. s the ball club is lacking in left handed pit hers, the acquisition of Mahler and M sselman, both lefties, should help them du ing this September drive. ere's to hoping they can go all the way thi year. Last year was close, but still not clo e enough. Perhaps if their hitting can co tinue to support the pitching staff, we'll se them in the World Series. Perhaps. !meal Talent s I have also mentioned before, I am swiftly running out of column ideas. So far I ave had complaints that I write too mu h football, and that I write about my.elf too much. I know football, and I kntw myself, so what can I' do? at I would like to do is write in this we kly column about interesting local sp t s figures and activities. s I am still relatively new to the town, I am not fully aware of what is going on in the sports world here, or who may be some out tanding sports figures. I would appreciate any tips on exciting or teresting sporting events going on in the area so I can either plug them or write ab' t then in my column. T e same goes for sports figures.
