But, I just have to mention the Toronto Argonauts beat the Edmonton Eskimos for the second time this season last Saturday. Grey Cup, here we come! Now into one of the real topics for this column - the basketball I played and was the subject for my first column is about to come to an end. The final game is this week. I can't really say whether the games got less serious, or I just got more relaxed with my playing, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. By about the third week of play, I no longer got rid of the ball as soon as it came to me, because it didn't matter whether I screwed up or not. I knew I was having fun; no pressure. As to the playing whipping me into shape, I can't really say if it worked or not. For the first few games I was lucky if I could crawl out after running back and forth for an hour and a half, but near the end I was able to walk out under my own power. Either the play got slower, or I have re- tained a bit of the lung power I had thought was lost forever. The pain in my chest and my labored breathing at the start of the summer season assured me I had either lost one lung .on my way to the game, or both had shrivelled with the thought of all that running. I guess basketball did get me into some semblance of shape. Next, we should review my play. Im- proved or not? To be perfectly 'honest, I would have to say I may have improved a tiny bit, which still left a large gulf betweef my playing ability, and that of the guys I played with. My first improvement would have to be that I did not immediately throw•the ball away„whea. it came tome. At the outset,,I didn't want to have anything to do with.it. If someone was standing at the end of the court after the other team had scored a basket, I used to turn my back so I wouldn't have to bring the ball up the court.(I think I noticed other people doing this, but probably for different reasons). Another trick I learned was to be theper- son that brought the ball out of bounds so I could just throw it in, and then it would be out of myhands. By the middle of the season I wasn't as terrified to take the ball up the court because I knew I could get rid of it at any time. My next point I feel I improved on, and this is the last one, is my shooting. This is not to say that my average was even fair, but at least my shots were lan- ding in the general proximity of the net. When I first started and everyone was yelling, "put it up, put it up" I used to pass the ball away. I was afraid to put it up, because I knew my "up" wouldn't be anywhere near where everyone was ex- pecting it to be. By mid-season, I was brave enough to let go with a few shots. My first few were just as bad as I had imagined they would be.' Up was about the only proper direction they flew. It is very embarrassing to miss everything, including the backboard and the net. Nearing the end, I almost always managed to hit at least hit the backboard and I think I scored one basket on a jural shot. Fortunately, my remaining coordinatioi allowed me not to miss the shots when was standing right under the basket. Tha was a major relief, and I was able to scor a few baskets that way. Overall, I am still a terrible player, but had fun. Probably the best thing that came abo1. was I made my first Clinton friend basketball, so when I totally screwed up, wasn't the only one laughing at me. Field hockey Remember, you heard it here first. A while back, I wrote a story o Canada's World Cup field hockey teary. and followed it up with criticism of th larger newspapers for ignoring a Cana dian team competing in worlt competition. Following my story, there was a large press conference in Toronto for the team. and still they did not get any coverage. Well, now that the team has come away with a bronze medal in the cup, they are making all .of the major papers. It is too bad that some Canadians have to excel before they get the coverage they deserve, but it is nice to see this team final- • ly getting some recognition for their hard work. I'm proud to say my story, and part of my column were sent to the Netherlands, where 'the games were being plaYed, by the father of one of the team's players to show they weren't forgotten. I'm even prouder to say congratulations. • Farquhar strong at Supercross ATV racing action continued with an ATV Supercross held at the Aylmer Fair on August 24th.
