BEHIND THE SCENES
Wedding gtop will off Cake talk
By Anne Narejko
BLYTH - Those who saw Cake Walk in
1984 may think they need not see it again
this season, but don't let the thought enter
your mind. The play may have the same
story line, but the director, actors and ac-
tresses are different, and for the most part,
the costumes are also different.
For Kerry Hackett, who is the Blyth
Festival's resident costume designer, Cake
Walk has provided a challenge.
In total, Ms. Hackett designed eight
costumes for the play.
"There are some costumes you can't
change. A baseball uniform is a baseball
uniform and scout leaders have to look like
scout leaders," explained Ms. Hackett.
Other costumes she has designed for Cake
Walk include a tennis outfit, clothing for an
archeologist,, a chiffon dress for the bride's
mother and an Indian cotton dress. She has
also had the challenge of making a nun not
look like a nun.
However, the biggest challenge of all has
been the wedding dress for spoiled, self-
centred Tiffany.
"Everything in the show is a gag, so
everything is done too much," said Ms.
Hackett. "The idea for ,the wedding gown
was to start off with the basic gown and
start adding until there was too much to
hold."
The wedding gown has taken the most
time and she estimates the finished product
will be the result of 80 hours work.
For the dress Ms. Hackett has used a wide
variety of material. Some of the fabrics are
satin, netting, lace appliques, nylon and
polyester.
Ms. Hackett became a costume designer
by accident. She initially wanted to be an ac-
tress but found the competition and lifestyle
not to her liking. She went to the University
of Victoria where she was studying art and
more technical aspects. Later she ran the
costume department there.
The 1986 production of Cake Walk will
definitely be different from the 1984 play,
and Ms. Hackett feels all the changes will
"go over well."

It takes a lot of talent and a lot of imagination to create a wedding gown that is "too much," ,
but Kerry Hackett (left) has done just that. Here she puts some finishing touches on the
dress that will be worn by Tiffany (Paulina Gillis) in the 1986 production of Cake Walk.

Blyth Festival is having a successful season
"Sorry, we have mitickets left for that
performance." That's becoming a familiar
refrain at the Blyth Festival Box Office
these days as tickets are selling quickly.
"This is normal for the height of the holiday
season}," said General Manager, Brenda
Doner. "But people shouldn't get discourag-
ed - we do still have tickets for many
performances."
GONE TO GLORY has proved the most
popular play to date, with numerous perfor-
mances sold out even before the play open-
ed! ANOTHER SEASON'S PROMISE has
also picked up dramatically (excuse the
pour). There are still a few tickets left'for
GLORY on August 18 and 19, and for PRO-
MISE on August 16 (matinee) ; there are
also rush tickets available prior to every
performance. Tickets for DRIFT are
available for the performances on August 14
and 21, and LILLY, ALTA., (described by
the critics as 'spectacular', 'imaginative',
'fun'), has tickets for most performances.
The final performance dates are August 21
for LILLY, August 22 for DRIFT, and
August 23 for GLORY and PROMISE.
CAKE -WALK, the return of the hilarious
1984 comedy, opens on August 26. It is sold
out for the matinee performance on August
28, but excellent tickets remain for all other
performances. Don't miss out on a great
evening at the theatt'e 1,Call the Box Office
