Ball and hockey
action. since, the 1960s
Although dormant for a number of years,
Varna's energetic youth came to life in 1960
when they formed a softball team. In their
first game they defeated Brucefield by 9
runs. When the Central Huron Softball
League was organized, Varna became a
member and to date has always batted its
way into the play-offs.
In the fall of '67, these high spirited boys
took to skates, entered the Clinton Industrial
League, and were triumphant at the end of
the first season.

Union School Section No. 1
Hay and Stanley
On April 6, 1893 land for a school was pur-
chased from Lot 29, south boundary of
Stanley Township from Wm. Johnston and a °
brick school was built. This school served
both Catholic and Protestant children from
the nearby areas of both Hay and Stanley
Townships.
On January 1, 1904, the separate school
was opened north of Drysdale and due to the
increasing number of Catholic families in
the area, the school population at U.S.S. No.
1 declined. The school was closed in 1964, the
last teacher being Mrs. Graham of Clinton.
The building was later torn down and the
land sold back to Alvin Rau in 1961.
In the later years of the small schools in
Stanley Township, Union School Section No.
1 became part of Stanley Township School
area and the Protestant School children
were transported to S.S. 4.
