Stanley
Township
Complex was
officially opened
in 1984
On September 1, 1984, MPP Jack Riddell,
MP Murray Cardiff, Goderich Township
Reeve Grant Stirling and Bayfield Reeve
Dave Johnston helped Stanley Township
Councillors and residents open the Stanley
Township Community Complex.
The $1.1 -million Complex contains a work
centre, municipal offices and a community
centre - all very well equipped.
A New Horizons grant of $10,705 was
awarded to the Stanlee Seniors who used the
money to buy a piano, a stereo, six parti-
tions, 100 stacking chairs, 100 of the more
than 300 place settings, an 100 -cup coffee
perc and two shuffleboard courts.
The community centre can be used for
sports or social gathers, Its ceiling is high
enough for games of basketball or volleyball
and it is big enough to serve as an indoor
tennis court.. Bob Simpson of Vanastra
painted a mural, township crest and depic-
tion of male and female athletes in action on
the walls.
The kitchen facilities are on par with
those in a commercial or " industrial
establishment. Stainless steel is
everywhere. The stove has four ovens, two
elements and a large hot top. The '
dishwasher will process a full tray of dirty
dishes in one minute. The walk-in .cooler is
also accessible from the bar on the other
side of one wall. to serve
The hall and kitchen are equipped
food to 350 and the centre is licenced for 366.
The spacious municipal offices are as
functional as they are attractive. The coun-
cil table was handcrafted on the site by Mur-
ray Garret of Clinton. He was also responsi-
ble for the cupboards and shelves in the .
library and kitchen.
The vault room has space for thousands of
files as well as tables and chairs for those
wanting to search through old records.
Separate offices are provided for the clerk
and reeve and a small kitchenette finishes
the municipal offices.
The dominant feature in the five -bay work
garage is the overhead crane capable of
travelling the entire length of the building.
Along one side is the mechanical room with
water heaters and softeners and the elec
trical control panel for the entire complex, a
supply and storage room, a washroom, a
lunch room, and a large office for the roads
superintendent.
The complex is protected by an elaborate
security system. Every entrance must be
opened with special keys which turn off the
intruder alarm within 30 to 60 seconds.
Anyone managing to get through the doors
into the municipal office would immediately
be on "candid camera" and would trigger
the siren on the roof. A blue light on the roof
would also activate, telling passers-by of a
burglar inside. A companion red light will
light up in case of fire.
The phone system is connected internally
to enable phones to be answered anywhere
within the complex when necessary.
Labor costs totaled $292,000 and were
covered by a federal COED grant.
According to then reeve Paul Steckle, the
cost of the complex would have been close to
$1.5 -million if council hadn't done its own
contracting.
Mr. Steckle was quoted in July, 1984 as
saying, '1 never dreamed we'd get a
building like this. We took no shortcuts - the
is straight, it's well wired, the workmanship
is superior. The tradesmen took great pride
in what they did."
