man Y
For a few years, he shod horses and with
their decline he became more involved in
repairing and building implements for the
local farmers.
Stuart's many accomplishments have 40,
stemmed from his interest in nature and
his understanding of woods and metals as
well as his love of pioneer history,
His metal work has included wrought
iron railings and the building of, small
steam.engines.
Following Beth's death in 1966, Stuart
married the former Reta (Wood)
Hamilton.
Since his ,retirement in 1974, Stuart has
been able to devote more time to wood car-
ving. H'e prefers to use cedar and sumac
and has carved many beautiful eagles and
owls in great detail as well as various
animals, an Indian family, and two totem
poles one of which is his water pump. He
has made many different lamps andvases
of light and dark wood in checkered pat-
terns. He built much of his own wood work-
ing machinery such as a small saw mill,
band saw and wood lathe. Stuart alsn.
repairs antique clocks and furniture.
BY NANCY MARCHL
Stuart Taylor is a man of many talents
and a forty year resident of the Nile in Col-
borne Township.
He was born near Wi rton in 1908 to Fred
and Margaret Taylor. As a boy he had a
keen interest in nature and this would in-
fluence much of his life.
In the late twenties, Stuart went West on
two harvest excursions. And then came the
Depression and ten difficult years. During
this time, he worked at what jobs he could
find including one year as a lumber jack in
Northern Ontario. Between times he was
at home teaching himself the blacksmith
trade on a small forge.
In1937, his family moved to Goderich
and here he worked at Baechler's, Domi-
nion Roads and finally at Sky Harbour. He
learned welding here and stayed until its
closing at the end of the War.
In 1942, 'he married the former Beth
MUicPhee and they had two daughters, Bar-
bara (Bakker) and Nancy (Marchl).
In 1944, Stuart purchased the Nile pro-
perty from Jim Elliott and established his
blacksmith and machinery repairs shop.
Township Tales
WOMAN SUFFRAGE
The first married woman to vote at a
municipal election in Colborne was the
wife of J.J. Fisher, who having property,
in her own name was placed on the voters'
list. On returning from the poll they met a
candidate for the reeveship and address-\
ing him Mr. Fisher said, "They say my
wife has no vote." To this the candidate
agreed, but Mr. Fisher replied, "But I say
she has a vote, for she has voted."
Best Wishes
are extended to Colborne Township
on the occasion of your Sesquicentennial.
The accomplishment of a fine heritage.
