Reuben R. Sallws
A legend in photography,
he captured people in
their natural surroundings
Reuben R. Sallows best described his work in his own words. "I always strive to take
people unawares, in their natural moods, at their common callings, or in familiar sur-
roundings — all of which I find imparts natural and lifelike qualititesto all my studies."
It was these "lifelike qualities" that were to 'make him a legend in the world of
photography across Huron'County, Canada and beyond. He opened his studio in 1879 and
soon gained a reputation for his portraits and groups, but impatient with waiting for sub-
jects to come'to his studio, he took his camera to the outdoors where he found an
unlimited source of material.
Around 1900 the Immigration Department 'commissioned him to travel the prairies
with his camera. He lived among the Doukhobors of British Columbia to gain their con-
fidence. He travelled throughout the Canadian North-west living with the native people,
and his Arctic pictures are now priceless. Farm magazines accepted all the work he
weuld send. The Canadian. Pacific Railway enlarged his scenery photographs for publici-
ty. His pictures of Earns life meal a biery oft a cliarig ng pattcra:s of agriculture. He was
born in Colborne Township but resided ill -Gorki -itch for many years. He took a keen in-
terest in civic life and served as town councillor and school board trustee. He was a pro-
minent member of Knox Presbyterian Church. of his
He always set a high standard for himself and stated that 'the popular approval
work urged him to use all his efforts to place in his productions a mark of distinctive'
quality.' In other words, he called upon himself "to do his best" in all his endeavours.
On the way to take a photograph at a summer camp at Kintail, his one -seated Ford
"remabout" hit loose gravel and overturned. Although conscious when pulled from
beneath his car, his chest was crushed. He was rushed to hospital and died fourteen hours
later. He was in his 81st year.'
