The Goderich-Kincardine railway was abandoned
1908 the notorious John W. Moyes became
president. Tracks were laid as far as Kin -
tail from the top of Dunlop Hill from which
point the C.P.R. tracks were used into
Goderich. Engine No.999 pulled two flat
cars. Cargoes of grain were taken into
Goderich and coal brought out. In the Fall
of 1911 operations came to an unexpected
stop for the railway office was closed and
salaries no longer paid. By the time the in-
terest on the bonds came due, Mr. Moyes
had disappeared. Many attempts were
made to continue the line but finally in 1917
the locomotive, rails, flat cars, spikes,
nails, ties,, and timber were bought by the
Ontario Hydro to be used by the Chippewa
Power Project atNiagara Falls.
The bonds matured in 1938 and although
the interestpayments had been honoured,
the principal still had to be met and it was
not until about 1942 that the total obligation
of around one million dollars was paid off.
The right-of-way rusaning from, Goderich
to Kincardine was sold to the Department
of Highways of Ontario in 1946 for one
dollar. A remaining hand -car and scraper
used by the railway can still be seen in the
Huron County Museum.
The motor vehicle had taken over and
there were those who felt it was just as
well that the railroad had never been com-
pleted. In their words, it would never have
paid for the grease on the axles!

The Canadian Pacific Railway created
McGaw in 1907. It had a vigorous heyday
shipping hogs, apples, grain ,cattle and
milk. Trains would pass every twenty
minutes at its peak, but gradually the
struggle to survive was lost in 1964. Trucks
were in command!
In 1985, Howatt Bros, and Brindley
Transport provide trucking service to Col-
borne Township farmers.
The Norman Durst Trucking Company
was purchased by Carmen Brindley in
1946. He also purchased Bill Clark's PCV
licence and business. Carmen continued to
build the business from 1946 until the 1970's
when he retired. His son Jim now carries
on the business as Brindley Transport.
Township Tales
1896
A deputation consisting of Joseph Beck,
David McLaren and James Weiis waited
on the Council asking for a grant of money
to aid in procuring fire protection for the
Village of Sanford.
It was moved by A.A. Young, seconded
by Nathan Johns that $40.00 be granted for
that purpose.
There was a Township grant of 15 cents
per rod on wire to fence ratepayers proper-
ty on Township roads.
