Colborne men
will participate
in concluding
church service
While the Colborne Township Ses-
quicentennial celebrations offer a
weekend of fun, frolic and erevelry, the
organizing committee has purposely plan-•
ned for the weekend celebrations to con-
elude
on-elude with a church service.
The open-air service will take place on
the 'grounds of Colborne Central School
and will feature participation by several
former township men who have joined the
ministry.
Church committee chairman Bob Jewell
said the service will provide a fitting con -
elusion to the Sesquicentennial
celebrations.
The Rev. Robert Bissett, now retired,
will conduct the 2 p.m. church service and
will be assisted by Rev. Paul Linklater,
who will deliver the homily, Rev. Earl
Reaburn, Rev• Peter Walters; Rev. John
Wood of Goderich and Rev. Bob Roberts of
Nile.
Religion played an important role in the
development of the township and Jewell
noted that• at one time there was 10 or 12
churches scattered throughout the
township. Now, Benmiller United Church
is the only one located within the township
boundaries. Nile United Church is located
on the boundary line of Colborne, Ashfield
and West Wawanosh Townships.
The Colborne Choir will be singing at the
church service and the group has been
rehearsing in earnest in preparation for
the service. They will also make ap-
pearances at other church services in the
area after the township celebrations.
Four young Colborne Township couples.
will take up the offering at the service and
the proceeds will be donated to Family and
Children's Services and to help handicap-
ped children. The couples will represent
Benmiller United Church,. Nile United
Church, Christian Reformed Church and
the final couple will represent a Roman
Catholic Church.
After the church service, hundreds of
helium -filled balloons will be released
from the school grounds. The balloons will
contain tags and recognition will be of-
fered to the person responding from the
greatest distance.
Both the open-air church service and the
gigantic balloon release promise to offer a
fitting .conclusion toa weekend of
festivities, fun, food, reminiscences, and
reflection.
