BLYTH - The Festival is known for its in-
novative ideas, uniqueapproaches and
quality performances, so when it was decid-
ed to ask the husband and wife team of
Peter Smith and Laurel Paetz to play a hus-
band and wife duo in Drift, it was one more
intriguing idea.
The couple, from western Canada, do not
have the opportunity to act in the same
plays, or same towns very often, so the
chance to do Driftwas a welcome change.
"It's working out great," said Peter.
"When we're at home I ask Laurel if this
works for her or not."
Laurel is also enjoyingthe experience and
finds herself hlping her husband a little
more than she ould other actors.
"If Peter happens to forget a line or a
move, I tell him," she saida adding, "But I
should probably treat him like I would
anyone else.
But treating her husband as if he were just
another actor is not easy. Laurel's
character in Drift requires her to yell at
Peter's character, leaving her with iTlixed
feelings.
"It's hard to see P,;ter as the character of
Tom. The husband .' ' wife don't get along
and I feel bad yelling at him...It's hard to
remove yourself from the character
sometimes."
However, Peter is not having this problem
and says, "In Drift I can separate the
characters from real life."
Aside from this summer, the couple don't
end their 'work day by going home to each
other and discussing their day very often.
They are frequently working in different
towns, or if they are in the same town, their
schedules are different.
"What we tried to do before was go out to
a show when we did have time together but
we found that we stared at the movie and
really didn't talk to each other," said Peter.
"Now we go out to dinner - we can talk and
see each other."
As well as each having a busy schedule to
contend with, Laurel and Peter have a one-
year -old son, Mathew.
"He's great. He's been on all forms of
transportation and he doesn't make strange
when we move around," said the proud
father.
Both Peter and Laurel attribute Mathew's
ability to readily arrent 'ehan'P to the

Peter Smith and Laurel Paetz are happily married, successfully raising a family as well
as continuing with their acting, careers. Doesn't sound too difficult until you discover

positive attitudes of the people he comes in
contact with, most of whom are in the acting
business.
While in Blyth, Sheron ,.Stadelman has
been looking after Mathew and Laurel feels
she is doing a super job.
Peter is usually away from his family for
approximately six weeks, but last fall he
was gone for three months, an absence
Laurel hopes is not repeated.
"That was really difficult," she said.
The couple, who will also perform in Lily,
Alta.in Blyth this year, are not strangers to
the Blyth Festival. In 1984, Laurel perform-
ed in Spider In The, House and Calkwalk.
Last year she was in Polderland and Peter
was in Moose County and Primerose School
District 109, a play which they will be acting
in as husband and wife at the Prairie
Theatre Exchange this fall.
Laurel and Peter met while acting in
Twelfth Nightand haven't looked back.
Although the pace is hectic and the time that
they are apart seems long, they plan to stay
in the business.
"We want to work and raise a family at
the same time. If we can do it, we will," said
Laurel.
"We're very happy - we love the business
and we have a great son,"added Peter.

Local boy is in Festival production
Jason Lee, a 12 year old Blyth resident, is
the youngest actor on the Blyth Festival
stage this season. Jason plays the role of
Sandy Purves, the youngest in a family
spanning four generations, in Another
Season's Promise.
He first heard of the acting opportun y
when Mr. Black, principal of Blyth is
School where Jason is in Grade 7, announc-
ed that the Festival was looking for a boy for
one of the plays. Along with several other
hopefuls, Jason read lines from the script
for Katherine Kaszas, Artistic Director of
the Festival, and Keith Roulston, co-author
of the play and editor of the Blyth and
Brussels Citizen.
Was he nervous on stage? "For the first
few nights I was pretty scared, but now I'm
not. I was also really tired at the final
rehearsals, right before the play opened,"

Jason's family have lived in Blyth "ever
