Voltage
reduction test
on July 15
_, voltage reduction . test will Mbe c o n -
ducted by Ontario Hydro on July 15.
Between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and
again from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., voltage
on the Ontario Hydro electrical grid will be
reduced by five per cent.
For most customers, the effect of these
two reductions will be imperceptible.
Testing the power distribution grid in
this way helps to ensure that, in the event
of a generation emergency (such as the
breakdown of a large generating unit),
there Will be no power interruptions.
A five per cent reduction in voltage
distributed over the Hydro system is
equivalent to reducing more than 500,000
kilowatts of electricity demand. That is the
output of a single Pickering reactor and is
enough to meet the electricity needs of
more than 180,000 homes.
As well, the data collected from the test
will help Hydro locate and resolve poten-
tial operating or customer problenis.
