w
tion when a other regional candidate
withdrew he name from the ballot. In other
elections .on S day, party leader Bob Rae
soundly . defeated token challenger, Ian
Orenstein, who received only 38 votes to
Rae's 776. On Saturday, delegates re-elected
Gillian Sandeman as ONDP President over
Judy Rebick by a margin of 457 votes.
Resolutions discussed during the conven-
tion included a lengthy, but articulate,
debate on the issue of the extension of fun-
ding to separate schools which resulted in
an affirmation of previous policy. The
resolution supports not only the recent vic-
tories of job protection provisions for
teachers and staff and measures to create
joint committees between public and
separate boards, but also calls for the
maintenance of public schools in single -
school communities, increased efforts to im-
prove funding for all educational institu-
tions, and open access for all students to
both systems.
Highlights of this 13th convention included
a keynote speech by Desmond Morton,
historian and author; a special dinner to
celebrate the 25th anniversary of the NDP;
and two performances of\ Diane Gordon in
"MacPhail", a play based on the life. of
Agnes MacPhail, first woman elected to the
House of Commons and member for South
East Grey.
