Be extra cautious ® summer's here
The months of July and August have been the favorite time of the year
for children and adults.
Children enjoy a two month break from their weekly routine of reading,
'riting and 'rithmetic while adults plan a week or two away from the daily
grind of employment.
To enjoy their vacations, people often pack up the car and head towards
the beach, board a plane and visit relatives and friends, or simply stay at
home and enjoy their backyard pool. Regardless of how you plan to spend
your holidays, remember to keep safety at the top of the list.
Summer is a beatiful time of year. Don't spoil it for yourself or others
by being fuulish or careless. - by Anne Narejko.

Programs are needed
dor welfare recipients
Dear Editor,
We are writing this letter in hopes that its
intentions will be conveyed to the mayor and
council of Clinton.
Being longtime residents of Clinton, we
have genuine interests in the town's image and
prosperity. We believe the industrial mall and
anything that contributes to the betterment
of Clinton, is an excellent idea, however, there
is one problem that needs to be remedied first.
It is well known throughout the county that
Clinton has an unusually high percentage of
welfare recipients.
As taxpayers, we suggest that these people
who thrive off of our taxes should make a con-
tribution to the community of Clinton.
It seems odd that this town could find, jobs
for the recently cancelled Katimavik group
but cannot provide similar tasks to occupy the
time of our welfare recipients andmake Clin-
ton a better place to live.

School's out
"No more pencils, no more books, no
more teachers dirty looks..."
Ah, to be young enough to sing these
words and enjoy a summer an the beach,
with your biggest worry being getting home
for supper on time. Now that was the life!
The 1985-86 year is over and students,
teachers and parents are preparing for sum-
mer vacation. For students it will be a time
to go swimming, play baseball, stay up late
and sleep in until noon.
For parents, it will be a time of racking
their brains in order to have a new response
to the "There's nothing to do" statement
children become famous for duringthe two
month period.
For teachers it will be a time to re -group,
re -organize and prepare for the upcoming
year.
Summer can be a very fascinating time
Is it not true that welfare is a transitional
stage to assist those that temporarily cannot
provide for themselves, and not a lifetime sup-
port system?
We realize that the welfare program is
regulated by federal and provincial legislation
and cannot be changed overnight but we feel
that some sort of program can be installed by
the municipality for the improvement of the
town and community of Clinton.
We wish to express that we do not denounce
those who use welfare but only..those who.
clearly abuse it.. .

for children, or it can be a long, boring twn
months.
The one thing I disliked about going back
to school in the fall was the "What I did dur-
ing the summer vacation" assignments.
While all the other kids were taking off to.ex-
otic places, visiting long lost relatives and
generally having an exciting summer, I'd
stay at home and only embark on one day
outings. But the strange thing is, I enjoyed
spending my sununers that way.
I'd sleep in until late morning, go outside
and relax and then maybe play a little
baseball in the evening. It seemed like the
life to me, but it didn't exactly make in-
teresting copy for my public school teachers
to read.
An interesting program offered in Clinton
during the summer months is called
Playground. The children who participate in
this have the chance to try their hand at a
number of interesting games, take bus trips
to a few places and, most iniportantiy, they
have the opportunity to meet and mix with
children from the town during the course of
the program.
As a reporter, I enjoy covering their
various activities. Kids are more than will-
ing to let anyone take their picture, but the
activities they become involved in are really
interesting.
Olympic Day is a biggy. Playground
groups from all the surrounding areas con-
verge on Clinton for a day of discus (Frisbee
throw), shot-put (ball throw), track,
obstacle course runs and plain old fashion
fun.
Another big event is the decorating of 40
bicycles and tricycles for a parade around
the arena. It's surprising how creative and
artistic,the children are.
But no matter what activities your -
children take part in this summer, one way
to make certain it is a good summer, is to
make sure they play safely.

Dear Editor and Citizens of Ontario:
I think it is high time that we, that huge

up an come to the assistance of our medical
profession.

New initiatives
The pace in Queen's Park and in the riding
continues to be hectic. Not only is the
Legislature sitting full time, but a number
of cabinet committees have full agendas as
well, including the four I sit on.
As we approach June 26, the first anniver-
sary of the new government, we should
pause and reflect back on a very busy year.
Much has been done by the new government
in both the area in which I am responsible,
Agriculture and Food, as well as in the
areas of small business development,
education enrichment, increased health ac-
cessibility, technological research, better
housing and a comprehensive seniors policy
to name just a few. But much has yet to be
done, and the government of Premier David
Peterson will continue to be very busy in the
coming months meeting the wishes of the
people.
Last week was again a very busy week for
the staff at the Ministry of Agriculture and
Food. I was fortunate to announce three new
initiatives to help Ontario food producers
and processors.
Pork Improvement Plan
On Tuesday, I opened the Ontario Pork
Congress in Stratford, where I announced a
new $54 million, five year program to im-
prove the province's pork industry.
The new program .has two components -
one to provide marketing assistance to the
processing industry and the other to provide
assistance to producers. Because pork pro-
duction in Ontario generates the third
largest farnigate income, to some 15,000
pork producers, as well, as employing a fur-
ther 14,000 jobs in the meat processing in-
dustry. 1 Wanted to ensure this $1.2 billion
