Safety measures eas . include air ort security
quirements for accident reporting and
records -keeping will all help achieve the
goal of reduced road transport accidents.
Other measures are being taken to reduce
railway accidents including a complete
review of safety provisions in the Railway
Act. New equipment at level crossings and
grade separation work at these points ac-
count for upwards of $35 -million annually.
Provincial and municipal road authorities
contribute additional funds to these pro-
jects. Still other measures are being taken
to reduce the possibility of accidents involv-
ing the transportation of dangerous goods.
Of major significance in the area of
transport safety would be the separation of
accident investigation in the rail and marine
mode from the current regulatory bodies.
This would remove , any possibility of
perceived conflict of interest and ensure an
independent examination of all the issues
during an investigation. This has already
been acomplished in the air mode with for-
mation of the Canadian Aviation Safety
Board.
