Artistic director returns
After a four absence
Grand Bend- Past artistic director, Aileen
Taylor Smith will be back this year at the
Huron Country Playhouse after a four-year
absence. She will be playing Mrs Mullen in
Carousel and Annie Brown in The Black
Bonspeil of Willie'MacCrimmon.
Aileen has a long association with The
Playhouse, being one of the original ac-
tresses to perform in The Playhouse's first
production Showoff in 1972. This was only
the first of a number of shows that Aileen
would play a major role in, leading up to her
appointment as artistic director of the
theatre from 1979 to 1982. In addition to her
acting and directing contributions to the
theatre, Aileen instituted the "Young
PLayers Company" which won the hearts of
PLayhouse patrons over their three years.
Originally, Aileen wanted to be a, director
in California, but when acting jobs were
easier to find, Aileen soon discovered she
had a flair for both. Born in Tennessee, and
now a resident on Toronto, Aileen's acting
career has taken her tyo Windsor, Barrie,
Toronto, Sudbury and New Brunswick.
However, it's the personal aspect of small
theatre and the friendly audiences of Grand
Bend that bring Aileen back to the Huron
Country Playhouse.
Aileen says, "I love coming home. I love
the people. Grand Bend is a warm-hearted
place. There's a richness from the input of
the audience that makes The Huron Country
Playhouse a healthy theatre."
They say home is where the heart is and
with Aileen it must be Grand Bend. "It was
with great difficulty that I had to leave each
time. I was always thinking of Grand Bend
while I was away."
Aileen's return will be of particular in-
terest to many Playhouse patrons, and
she'll want to say hello to each and everyone
of them.
HAPPY 40th

Grand Oendd-The Huron Country Playhouse
will present its opening play, Rodgers and
Hammerstein's Carousel on June 24 to July
12 on the main stage.
Based On the play.. Liliom, Rodgers and
Hammerstein manage to combine great
music, songs and dance while not detracting
from the story line of carousel barker, Billy
Bigelow who falls in love with mill girl, Julie
Jordan.
Artistic Director Steven Schipper says,
"It's great entertainment appealing to peo-
ple of all ages containing the best music of
Rodgers and Hammerstein." Other critics
say, "It's finest virtue is Mr. Rodgers'
music and since so much of Carousel is
music, it is always worth hearing."
Directed by Steven Schipper (his first pro-
duction at'Huron Country Playhouse), with
choreography by Kelly Robinson, Carousel
has over a dozen songs while including the
sailers hornpipe dance and modern ballet.
Also featured in Carousel are many well-
known Canadian actors including past Ar-
tistic Director Aileen Taylor -Smith.
With the rising cost of production, very
few theatres endeavour to produce large
scale musicals, however, the Huron Country
Playhouse has managed to present high
quality theatre without cutting back on
entertainment.
$84 -million for
faculty renewal
The Ontario Government has allocated
$84 -million for faculty renewal at Ontario's
universities over the next 10 years, Colleges
and Universities Minister Gregory Sorbara
announced.
Mr. Sorbara said that, as stated in the
May 13 budget, the faculty renewal compo-
nent of the University Excellence Fund will
provide 500 new faculty appointments bet-
ween now and 1991. Each of the appoint-
ments will be supported for a five-year
period, and to accomodate this, the pro-
gram's funding will carry through until
1994-95.
"This initiative should improve the
percentage of women faculty in our institu-
tions and, at the same time, increase the op-
portunities for young Canadian scholars to
teach in the system," Mr. Sorbara said.
"Excellence in both teaching and
research is largely dependent upon the
human resources within our institutions
and therefore a consistent flow of talented
new faculty into the system is vital to the in-
structional quality and adaptability of our
institutions."
Mr. Sorbara said that some 300 faculty
should be appointed during the first two
years of the multi-year program, an addi-
tional 70 faculty in both 1988-89 and 1989-90
and 60 in 1990-91. •
"Ontario's universities are a vital
resource to current and future generations,
but they havetsuffered deterioration as a
result of a decaderofchronic underfunding,"
Mr. Sorbara said. "While w.e cannot hope to
erase the results of this neglect overnight, I
believe that this multi-year, multi-million
dollar program clearly reflects this govern-
ment's determination to gftre our institu-
tions the long-term support they require."
