•FSAA is
an experience
CLINTON - Two Central Huron Secondary
School (CHSS) students, Steve Souch and
Devon Colquhoun, represented CHSS at the
all Ontario OFSAA Track and Field Meet,
held in Ottawa on May 7 and May 8.
Souch finished nineteenth in the midget
boys' 3,000 metre event with a very respec-
table 9.48 second run.
Colquhoun finished four enth in the
midget boys' high jump even i h a 1.7
metre jump.
Although neither of the two had expected
to make it as far as the OFSAA meet, Souch
explained that the experience taught them
something.
"I realized haw much practice we would
need to be good when I sav how good they
really are," he said of the athletes who
gatheed from across Ontario.
Both athletes hope to return to the team at
CHSS next year, but in Colquhoun's case he
may have to make the choice between soc-
cer and track and field, as the school may
not allow students to participate in more
than one sport at a time.
They also admitted the part they enjoy the
most about the sport is getting out and com-

Despi their failure to place in the top
rankings for OFSAA, neither of the athletes
are disappointed. "You realize It's OFSAA;
Lack of interest puts soccer
CLINTON - Due to a lack of interest on the
part of players and parents, Clinton will not
have a squirt soccer team this year.
"We have had limited interest," said Clin-
ton Director of Recreation, Steve Campbell.
"There were only four to six kids
interested."
Although Mr. Campbell put some of the
blame on the children for not wishing to
play, he also attributed part of the problem
to the fact that some parents do not wish to
stay in Clinton on the weekends for games.
He has also had difficulty finding an adult
who wanted to be head coach of the team, as
former coach and president of the soccer
association, John Preston, is moving and
can not take the job.
"Soccer is a specialized sport; in this area
I feel it is a newer sport," Mr. Campbell
said. "Parents are always telling me 'I don't
know anything about soccer."'
"John could do it when he had assistants,
but with John gone, no one wants to be head
coach," he said.
Mr. Campbell explained that the recrea-
tion committee may .have been able to do

more for soccer, but as they have taken over
three major events which they never had
before - soccer, minor ball and ball hockey -
they had no time.
"We can't give it the time it deserves, soc-
cer and minor ball take up a lot of time," he
said.
"Next year we could have someone come
in and be interested in running a team, and
it could take off from there, or it may not
happen for years," Mr. Campbell said.
"That's the way minor sports are."

seventh and last inning.
The Clinton team showed tremendous
character however as Clinton, after two '
were out, came back to score five' wins to
pull out a 5-4 victory. •
Jason Fleet doubled home Chris Fox for
the win. Fox was the only player on • Clin-
ton's team to get two hits in the game.
The second game was a much easier win
as Clinton crushed Goderich 17-0. Mike
Pelso 'pitched superbly to gain a three hit
shut out. Pelso and Scott Jewitt were the •
hitting stars o4 the game with three hits
each while Jason Fleet, Mike McClenaghan
and Shawn Chipchase contributed two hits
each.
The championship game was another
unbelievably tense encounter. Walkerton
was the oposition, and they obv ously came
to the game intent on a win as t ►ey quickly
moved to a 5-0 lead in the top f the first
inning.
Clinton was not to be denied however, and
they responded with three runs of their own.
The teams alternated runs until Clinton
tied it 7-7 in the fifth and took the lead 8-7 in
the sixth.
Walkerton gamely fought back and tied it
8-8 in the top of the seventh. The key blow of
the tournament was a bases loaded' smash
into right center field by Scott Jewitt in the
bottom of the seventh as Mike Pelso came ilk
to score the winning run.
Chris Fox and Scott Jewitt each, con-
tributed two hits while Jason Fleet, and
Shawn Chipchase both collected three hits
including a triple. Mike Pelso survived the
' first inning and pitched a strong complete
game for the win.
