If in doubt about the kind of program that will appeal to your child, a general activity camp may offer the best solution. Specialty camps offering intensive pro- grams in such areas as sports, arts, music or dance became popular a few years ago. But, according to Connett, the traditional, "all -activity" camps are still in the majority. Location is another important considera- tion when choosing a program. Make sure day camps are fairly close to the child's home to avoid lengthy bus trips. Regardless of the type of . camp involved, find out if transportation is provided by the operator. Southwest Ontario which includes Huron County, has been allocated $100 million for 328 chronic beds and 37 acute beds. The capital allocation, the largest in the history of Ontario, is the first phase of multi- year capital plan for the hospital system, Elston said. On top of this commitment, Elston said, a second phase of the plan will provide for ex- tensive renovations to hospitals to bring them up to current standards and to enable them to meet future needs such as more out- patient services. "We are taking this action in order to br- ing Ontario's hospital system into line with the needs of our population up to the late 1990's," the minister said. may be fully or partially refundable within a specific time period and under certain con- ditions. Check details about refunds before signing up and keep deposits as small as possible. Even when the final choice has been made and hours have been spent sewing name tags on every one of the child's socks, some parents still Vvorny, Connett says. Many claim they are concerned about their children getting home -sick, he says. "The funny thing is, the child is usually quite ready to stay away from home, but the parents aren't." The Ontario Camping Association runs an accreditation program for children's sum- mer camps in Ontario. Camps that wish to be accredited by the association must meet certain health and safety standards. They must 'also have been in operation for a least one year and are required to provide bank- ing references to the OCA. More than 200 Ontario summer camps are now accredited. To obtain a list or for more information about the association, call (416) 781-0525. Elston noted that for many years there has not been any rational plan guiding capital development of hospitals: "Because capital funds were allocated for hospitals on an annual basis, it was extremely difficult for hospitals to plan ahead on any long- range terms." Changing demographics are putting pressure on hosptials, the minister said. 'Current forecasts indicate that while our overall population will increase by about 17 per cent by the end of this century, the elder- ly population will increase by 53 per cent.' Elston said that the bed expansion in the first phase of the capital plan will provide approximately 1,400 new acute care beds and more than 3,000 new chronic care beds (see attached list for regional breakdown). The exact locations of these beds within each region will take into account recom- mendations from district health councils. The expansion represents an eight -per- cent increase in the number of beds in the province. When it is completed, Ontario will have More than 55,000 hospital beds, up from the current 50,079. The minister said acute care beds will be added primarily in areas of Ontario where the population is growing rapidly. But, he added, the substantial increase in chronic care beds should free up acute care beds in all hospitals. The waiting period for a chronic care bed in some areas of Ontario can be up totwo years, with the result that many people are waiting in acute care beds. The addition of new hospital beds, the minister said, will be accompanied by the expansion of out-patient programs and new community-based services which will be designed to help more people live in- dependently in their communities. If it were not for such innovative direc- tions in health care delivery, even more nev hospital beds would be needed, Elston said. $24,000 for landfill site studies A research grant of $24,000 to determine what concentrations of selected organic li- quids in domestic waste leachate would in- crease the permeability of clayey soils used as landfill liners in Southern Ontario, has been awarded to the University of Western Ontario, Environment Minister Jim Bradley announced.
