BLYTH - The works of the much ex-
hibited artist Tom Benner will be shown at
the Blyth Festival Gallery in the Gallery of
Blyth Memorial Hall from May 1 to June 1.
Included in the works to be exhibited will
be Great Auk, which depicts the birds
trailing one another in a deadpan waddle
in their warm -toned grey and white coats.
Also -included will be Owls in My Sleep and
White Pine.
The show will climax oh May 31 and
June 1 with a special slide show followed
by a discussion of his work, at the Blyth
Festival's Annual Used Book Sale.
Benner is a London artist who has won
national recognition for a number of his
works, including his Third World Parity
Kit which was shown in part at the Forest
City Gallery, and later in its entirety at the
London Regional Gallery
He has exhibited across the county and
his works are included in the Canada Coun-
cil Art Bank and the Art Gallery of Ontario
collection.
Benner's interest in nature is long-
standing as he exhibited large pictures of
real maple, elm and basswood leaves at
the McIntosh Gallery of the University of
Western Ontario in 1971.
Most recently he has been working on
pieces depicting different animals, birds
and nature symbols used by older civiliza-
tions, mainly those of North America.
The harm man is inflicting on such
animals as the great auk, the polar bear
d the sea eagle are portrayed in his re-
pieces. His work conveys a sense of
loss for these animals, and man's•lack of
understanding of his environment in
general.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Art
Gallery of Ontario through the Artist and
Their Work program.
The Blyth Festival Gallery will be open
Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5
p.ni. For further information, please con-
tact the Festival Box Office at 523-9300.
