The song Piet Hein is about
another Dutch hero. The first
verse and chorus are translated
here.
Have you ever heard of the
Silver Fleet,
The fleet that sailed for Spain?
It had many Spanish sailors on
board,
And silver for Spanish main.
Chorus
Piet Hein, Piet Hein, Piet Hein,
small is his name
But greater is his fame, but
greater is his fame,
Because he captured the fleet
from Spain,
Because he captured, he cap-
tured the fleet from Spain.
The next three verses tell
about the capture of the fleet of
23 ships carrying treasures
from the Americas to the
Spanish Main in 1628. The
Dutch sailors are said to have
spread butter on the decks of
their own ships, so that the
Spaniards slipped. The Dutch,
however, wore cleats!
