Sixtrfour participate in shuffleboard

VARNA - Ross and BeatrieeBiehardson of
Exeter and Eileen Rah* and Jeanette
Turner of Hensall were trophy winners at the
Stan -lee Shuffleboard Tournament held April
23 in the township complex. Runners-up were
Harold and Wilma Davis of Exeter and Ida
There were 64 competitors in the tourna-
ment., and some very close games.
Wilfred Chuter and .Alclie Mustard of the
Stan -Lee Club went to the semi-finals. Harold
Peck and Charles Reid organized the touran-
ment and a lunch was served by the ses-
quicentennial lunch corrunittee.
Congratulations to allyvho contributed to a
very sucessful event.
Carol Penhale recently called to provide
more information concerning artist Rich
Riordan who painted the scene for the ses-
quicentennial souvenir plate. He married
Shirley McFadden, daughter of "Mac" and
Marion McFadden, former owners of
Bayfield Hardware and the Building Centre.
Rich and Shirley are highly respected people,
and Rick's artistic talents are known to many
in the Bayfield area.

Jeff Muter were in Guelph on Apr1120 for the

Huron Centennial School gave a presenta-
tion of the history of Stanley Township on
April 23 and 24. They Call It Stanley, But I Ca"

The program guide was beautifull• design-
ed for keeping as a sesquicentenni-4 souvenir.
From the music and dances of the early set-
tlers to the more recent people from Holland,
the "Butter and Eggs" train and the modern
air band and break dancers, plus much more;
it was well done.
In the old tradition "the show must go on",
Paul Hill played Reeve Clarence Rau with his
leg in a cast, having fractured his ankle the
previous Saturday.
Gardening with UCW
Ray Holley will speak on using worm
castings in gardening at the May meeting of
Varna UCW on May 1 of this week. Meeting

There was a good crowd for the Stanley
Recreation Commission's Spring Dance at
the Complex on April 26. Door prize winners
were Hub Thiel - a sesquicentennial plate;
Jack and Tove Bell - Stanley Township
History Book; and Frank Soudant - tickets
to the New Year's Eve Dance. A number of
spot dance prizes were also awarded.
A highlight of the evening was the presen-
tation of a trophy to Mark Taylor and Ron -
'lie Coleman for their efforts in the canoe
ially. It was fashioned by Jerry Thiel of the
Zurich area. The trophy was mounted on a
big chunk of log, with a broken paddle over
it. Inscribed on the paddle was Donated by
the Bayfield River Spectators Club, and on
the plaque on the log was Mix and Dip in '86,
Canoe Rally, Bayfield River, April 13, 1986.

MIDDLETON - Morning Prayer and Bap-
tism were very well attended at St. James'
Middleton Anglican Church with Rev. Bell
officiating. Reading the lessons were Ralph
Welsh and Sharlene Stepheson.
Babies presented were Amy Elizabeth
Welsh, daughter of Ralph and Doreen
Welsh; her godparents were Ken and Anita
Stacey; Shallyn Marie Mills, daughter of
Len and Donna Mills with godparents Deir-
dre Lynch and Edward Deeves. Presenting
the baptismal candle were Shannon Schilbe
and Brad Wammes.
Receiving the offering was John Deeves
and Lea Mills.
Flowers in the church were in memory of
Mary Storey and Rhonda Stephenson.
Congratulations to Ron Greidanus, who is
the organist, on his achievements at the
Kiwanis Music Festival in Stratford and
London. Ron received two trophies, two pla-
ques, two firsts, one second, two fourths and
a $50 scholarship.

Pushers win B division in shuffleboard

HENSALL - The Happy Pushers con-
gratulate Eileen Rannie and Jannette
Turner on winning the "B" division gold
trophy at the senior's shuffleboard tourna-
ment held at the 'Stanley community com-
plex on April 23. Twelve attended from
Hensall.
High score ladies were: Olga Chipchase,
475; Betty Grenier, 399 and Pearl McKnight
368.
High scores for the men were: George
DOwsony 410;Howard Johns, 263 and 'John
Pepper, 246.
Last Euchre
The Three Links Seniors held their last
euchre party of the season on April 22. High
prizes were won by Ruby Bell and Annie
Finkbeiner. Mrs. Neeb and Dick Taylor
were low prize winners. Lone hand's was
won by Evelyn Flynn. The lucky winners of
the draw prize § were Ida Dickert, Gertie
Fleischauer, Mary Whitehouse, Pearl
McKnight, Eileen Consitt, Alice Ferg, Mrs.
Neeb, and Gertie Moir.
Golf Season Open
The ladies of the Exeter Golf and Country
Club open their season on May 6. A potluck
lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.

Honda Happy
Jim Dickins travelled to Mote Park near
Durham April 27 where he rode his Hully
Gully Honda to a fourth place finish in the
;80A class.

Vanastra Calvinettes place second

VANASTRA - The Calvinettes girl's club
for ages nine to 14 met every Monday from
7:30 - 8:45 p.m. at the Vanastra Christian
Reformed Church, where they had the op-
portunity for spiritual developmenVearning
Christian service and had a chance for per-
sonal growth and skill development.
The girls held Bible study, craft time and
discussions with counsellors Helen Roorda,
Joanne Ramaker and Hilda Visser and
Margaret Dykstra.
On April 19, Tammy Bell, Joan
McLachlan, Patricia Kelly, Pam Kelly, Kim
Embling and Lisa Sherban attended the all
day Calvinette Rally at the Clinton District
Christian School.
They joined 180 other girls and counsellors
for a time of fellowship, fun and
competition.

children thoroughly enjoyed his

Three of the Vanastra students will take
part with other area students in a special
Treasure Unit. Kim Dixon, Aaron Gardiner
and Christine Fowlie will start this learning
experience on April 30 at the Vanastra
Public School.
The students will also be learning scuba
diving at the Vanastra Recreation Centre.,
