HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1986-04-16, Page 23q.� Jr Farmers strive for better commumties CLINTON- With spring on its way, people are beginning to become a little more active than they have been throughout the winter months, and this is exactly what the Clinton anct District Junior Farmers have been in the past few weeks Active! The year began with members canvassing for the Heart and Stroke Foundation on February 22, where they collectgd donations amounting to $440 in a section west of Highway 4, in Hullett Township. March was membership month throughout the province, and the Clinton 4110 club had a total of 37 members at their last monthly meeting held in Clinton. Of the 37 members eight were new members Membership fees will also be accepted dur- ing any month throughout the year. Those who wish to become a member or would like more information can contact N. Cartwright 523-4712 or L. Cunningham 526-7557. Three enthusiastic members attended the executive work -shop in London of February 28 to March 2, and two delegates represented the club at March' Conference, also in London, on March 14 to 16. Both the workshop and the conference proved to be informative and enjoyable, with jam-packed sessions on needs, goals, parliamentary procedure, and communications. A donation of $500 was presented to the Clinton Public Hospital as the club's com- munity betterment project for the month of March. The attending members of the last meeting suggested, and are planning to donate their services to the Ministry of Natural Resources or the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. David Cartwright is to make inquiries and report back to the club at their next meeting on April 14 at the Vanastra and District Recreation Centre. Swimming will follow the meeting. All old and new members, and any interested per- sons are welcome. An upcoming social event to mark on the calendar is a community card party on April 7, at 8 p.m. in the Clinton Legion Hall. Lunch will be provided. Junior Farmers are young people who seek an opportunity to explore individual talents and potential. This co-educational group is designed to meet new friends and to demonstrate an interest and concern for the well being of their community. Club pro- jects are designed to improve the communi- ty in which they live. Meetings at the club level include business and recreation at Goderich and Clinton corrections At present there are approximately 7,500 Junior Farmers in rural and in some urban communities across Ontario. The ICON was designed under the guidance of the Ministry of Education to be used in the school setting. These computers are in four labs of 13 or more. Throughout the year these labs are moved from school to school for eight or nine week periods. The children from each class are then able to spend 30-40 minutes each day dri the computers while the lab is in the school. The teachers attended four three-hour training workshops illthe evening in order to become familiar with the use and teaching capabilities of the computers. Learning the use of the word processor, the program Logo, the drawing capabilities as well as the educational values of some new software created by the ministry, teachers throughout the system were able to in- troduce all of their pupils to the world of the ICON. The Huron -Perth RCSSB will continue to work toward making the new technology a part of the education system. As additional computers become available, in-service training for, teachers, as well as increased pupil access will result in improved facility in this new area of education. Provincial IODE • The annual meeting of the provincial chapter of Ontario IODE was held on Apr. 9 and 10 at the Holiday Inn, Toronto. The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, His Honor Lincoln 'McCauley Alexander and Her Honor Mrs. Alexander. were present for the opening ceremonies. Provincial President, Mrs. A.D. Christmas of Blenheim, Ontario gave the opening address. Highlights of the meeting were a member- ship award given to the chapter with the most new members. This is the single largest identified group in the world. The proposed official plan amendment would include within the Township Secondary Plan provisions pertaining to the use of Site Plan Control. The area to be subject to site plan control will include all areas within the Township of Tuckersmith zoned agricultural -commercial, urban commercial or urban industrial; extractive industrial uses; institutional uses; mobile home parks; and certain special uses including salvage yards.
