Clinton News-Record, 1986-04-16, Page 13Fishermen's
dilemma
Anglers who are anxious to wet a line
always face a dilemma at this time of
year.
Rainbows are being caught m the
rivermouths, but from all the reports
I've heard, spawn seems tobe the only
bait they're taking. That's where the pro-
blem lies.
If a fisherman doesn't have a suppy of
spawn to begin with, he's kind of stuck.
If the angler buys some, then he's par-
ticipating in a crime. Not only is the
fisherman guilty of being involved in the
purchasing and selling of rainbow
spawn, but he is also promoting and en-
couraging poaching activities. After all,
that's where the major portion of that il-
legal spawn comes from. It's called "cut-
ting your own throat".
So what's the solution? Unfortunately,
there is only one, and that's to keep
fishing with artificial bait until you get
lucky enough to pick up a hen°fish. And
when that finally happens, don't waste
what you do have, and be sure to set
some aside for next year.

Bass type fishing boats have not as yet
taken Canada by storm as they have in
the U.S., but they are catching on. There
may be other special applications con-
cerning trolling motors, but bass boats
are particularly susceptible to a pro-
blem which has just been identified. It
concerns the use of trolling motors and
sonar units which can cause some expen-
sive damage. A warning, released by
Lowrance, explains what can happen to
your unit.
Naturally Speaking
By Steve Coke
Extensive interference and possible
damage to sonar equipment can result
through the use of newly -introduced troll-
ing motor control systems, Lowrance
Electronics, Inc. officials have
announced.
The new systems are being offered by
at least three manufacturers, Lowrance
officials said, and others have announc-
ed plans to use them in the future.
Darrell Lowrance, president of the
firm, said the new units incorporated
speed controls based on pulse modulation
of direct current.
"These units emit an abnormal
amount of RFI (radio frequency in-
terference)," he said. "This radiation
can affect and possibly damage all types
of depthfinders."
Lowrance said his company has con-
ducted extensive tests using all leading
brands of depthfinders, including new li-
quid crystal display units, flashers and
straight line graphs, and two trolling
motors incorporating the new speed con-
trol systems.
"All sonar units located within the im-
mediate vicinity of a motor utilizing the
new system can be affected," he said.
"It is a serious problem. We are infor-
ming our customers" that warranties on
our depthfinders will be voided if damag-
ed by use of one of the new speed control
units."
"We have also contacted all the troll-
ing motor manufacturers using this
speed control system, to let them know
of our concern. Our test results are be-
ing made available to them," he said.
"In addition, we have contacted all the
major sonar manufacturers, our
distributors and dealers, and boat
manufacturers to inform them of the pro-
blem," he added.
The tests reveal that trolling motors
with the new speed control system will
"black out" new liquid crystal display
graphs and recorders which are capable
of showing fish; cause extensive in-
terferenee•lines on straight line graphs,
and completely "light up" the dials on
flasher units, when both are used at the
same time.
"When the two units are near each
other, and the troll motor is used for a
length of time, extensive damage can oc-
cur to the depthfinder," Lowrance said.
"All electrical devices put out some
RFI", he added. "The secret is to make
them so they conform to acceptable stan-
dards."
