The Clinton Atoms won six consecutive games over the weekend to not only capture the
Mildmay tournament but they were also victorious in the Grand .Championship Tourna-
ment in Durham. Last week, the Atoms also won the WOAA Atom CC Championship this
year for the second straight year over Mitchell. Here, HUgh Hodgins, the only life

Atoms end fantastic year
During the past weekend the Clinton Atoms
.put an end to an incredible hockey season as
they won six consecutive hockey games in
less than 36 hours to capture two' More
championships to go along with four tourna-
ment championships that they had won
previously.
To top it off they did it. in an incredible
way. They found themselves in a difficult
position by travelling back and forth from
the Mildmay Tournament and the Durham
Atom Grand Championship Tournament. It
will be a weekend well -remembered both by
the players as well as the dedicated parents
and followers.
It all started on Saturday morning when
they travelled to Mildmay to play their fist
game at 8:30 a.m. against Kincardine. Clin-
ton won 5-0. By 12 noon they found
themselves playing in Durham against
Hanover. in which they won 6-2. Three hours

later in Durham, Clinton took on Elma-

It was no rest for the wicked as they took
to the ice again on Sunday at Mildmay at
2:20 against a tough Walkerton Club, Clinton
won 3-1. Without a moments delay it was
back to Durham to play against Shallow
Lake in the Grand Championship Game.
After winning the Grand Championship and
just taking off their skates, they motored
back to Mildmay to play Hanover in the"B"
Championship gain.
The boys dug down deep one more time as
they have done all year and with•a superb ef-
fort defeated Hanover for the second time
ori the weekend to capture their sixth tour•-'
nament of the year.
The players would like to thank the
dedicated moms and dads, coaches and
followers for giving them stipport
throughout this memorable hockey season.

On Saturday, April 5th, Clinton opposed
the Hanover Barons in the first game of the
championship winners at Durham. Clinton
as the CC winners and Hanover as the B win-
ners had never played each other 'this year.
Clinton 6 - Hanover 2
Action in the first period was fast and ex-
citing as both teams opened up right from
the opening face-off. Clinton grabbed a 1.0
lead at the nine second mark as Shawn Chip -
chase took the puck right from the opening
face-off down the ice before feeding Jason
Carter for an easy score..
Scott Jewitt made it 2-0 at the 59 second
mark as he was Set up beautifully for a wrist
shot by Jason Carter.
After Hanover cut the lead to 2-1 Jason
Carter, on an assist from Shawn Chipchase,
gave Clinton a 3-1 lead at 5:50. About two
minutes later Chris Kennedy's wrist shot,
high to the left corner gave Clinton a 4-1 ad-
vantage. Mark Livermore and Danny
Wildfong fearned assists on the play.
Before the first period ended Hanover had
narrowed the score to 4-2.
With coach Bob Livermore encouraging
his players to be more defensive minded the
pace of the game slowed down a little. But
two quick goals by Shawn Chipchase 18
seconds apart during the middle stages of
the second period gave Clinton the
breathing room they needed for the victory.
The third period was lacklustre as both
teams checked one another to a stand still.
The final score read Clinton 6 Hanover 2.
Clinton 5 - Elma Logan 1
After running the first game, Clinton
came up against a determined Elma-Logan
team. But Clinton was equal to the task as
they skated away with a 5-1 decision.
Clinton took an early 1-0 lead in the first
period on a goal by Shawn Chipchase 43
seconds into the game. Jason Carteiad
done all the spade work before feeding Chip -
chase his hard wrist shot goal to the. corner.
With just 14 seconds left in the period Danny
Wildfong with his 24th goal of the season

In the second period at 2:29 Shawn Chip -
chase, on a breakavyay pass from Scott
Jewitt, made it 3-0. At 5:45 Scott Jewitt,
manoeuvered his way through heavy traffic
to score. Carter and Chipchase drew the
assists. Elma-Logan's Kevin Hremstra
spoiled Derek Iloggarth's shut out attempt
at 7:01.
In the third period with Clinton's forwards
and their defence of Scott Rathwell, Shane
MacDonald, Scott Shaddick and Scott
Wright playing excellent hockey they were
able to hold Elma-Logan at bay. Shawn
Chipchase scored the only goal of the period
and it was a short-handed effort at 1:58...
Scott Rathwell and Scott Jewitt earned
assists.

In one of the most exciting games of the
year as far as the players and their parents
were concerned was the Grand Champion-
ship game against Shallow Lake for the
overall Atom crown.
In the third period with Clinton's forwards
and their defence of Scott Rathwell Shane
MacDonald, Scott Shaddick and Scott
Wright playing excellent hockey they .were
able to hold Elma-Logan at bay. Shawn
Chipchase scored the only goal of the period
and it was a short-handed effort at 1:58.
Scott Rathwell and Scott Jewitt earned
assists.
Clinton 9 - Shallow Lake 5
In one of the most exciting games of the
year as far as the players and their parents
were concerned was the Grand Champion-
ship game against Shallow Lake for the
overall Atom crown.
After being down in the. third period by a
score of 5-2 with less than two minutes re-
maining the Clinton Atoms staged a com-
eback that will be well remembered by
them for a long time.
At the beginning of the third period Clin-
ton trailed Shallow Lake by a score of 4-1.

and Scott Jewitt score at the 25 second
mark to cut, the Shallow Lake lead to 42.
Shawn Chipehase earned the assist.
With less than five minutes remaining and
the clock running down en the Clinton boys,
Shallow Lake scored again to give them a
big three goal lead. That's when the roof fell
in on them and Clinton. began their ,big
comeback.
With 1:58 left in the game Scott Rathwell
scored on one of his fantastic end-to-end
rushes to cut the lead to two goals. Debating
to pull the goalie, coach Bob Livermore lett
Iloggarth in. With 1:10 left Jasons Carter's
beautiful wrist shot caught the goalie by KW'
prise to keep Clinton's hopes alive. Chip-
chase and Jewitt earned assists on the goal,
After controlling the ensuing face-off Clin-
ton
linton made another rush up the ice and with 30
seconds showing on the clock , Shawn Chip -
chase took a super pass from Jason Carter
to knot the score at 5-5 and sent the game in-
to overtime.
Overtime
In the overtime period the momentum
again was in Clinton's favor as they con-
tinued to swarm around the Shallow Lake
goalie.
Atter blowing the late third period three
goal lead, the Shallow Lake team seemed
deflated. In the overtime session Clinton
scored four goals to nail down the very im-
pressive comeback victory.
Jason Carter notched two of the goals
while Shawn Chipchase and Chris Kennedy
scored the others in overtime. Congratula-
tions Boys for an excellent season of enter-
taining hockey.
After the game Captain Scott Jewitt and
co -captains Jason Carter and Shawn Chip -
chase were presented with the Grand Cham-
pionship Trophy. The team then went for
their traditional victory skate around the ice
much to the delight of their fellow
supporters.

On Saturday the Clinton Atoms travelled
to Mildmay's 27th Annual Atom Hockey
Tournament. Clinton's first opponent was
Kincardine who had defeated Clinton earlier
this year at the Hanover Barons Tourna-
ment in December..
Clinton was ready for sweet revenge
which they received as Derek Hoggarth
blanked Kincardine on the score sheet as his
teammates skated .to . a convincing 5-0

In the first period Shaun Chipchase, on
some beautiful passing from linemates
Jason Carter, and Scott Jewitt, gave Clinton
a 1-0.lead at the 47 second mark. ScottJewitt
increased Clinton's lead to 2-0 in the second
period as Scott Rathwell's blueline shot was
re -directed in by Jewitt. Before the second
period ended Clinton's Mark Livermore
scored his 30th goal of the season as he bang-
ed in a rebound off Danny. Wildfong's shot.
Scott Jewitt also earned an assist on the

pa In the third period two goals by Scott
Jewitt rounded out the Atom scoring. On
Jewitt's both goals linemates Jason Carter
and Shaun Chipchase earned assists. Shaun
Chipchase was •voted Clinton's Most
Valuable Player for the game.
Clinton 3 - Walkerton 1
On Sunday, Clinton came up against a
strong Walkerton team in their second game.
of the Mildmay Tournament. Again, it was
strong goaltending by Derek Hoggarth and
good back -checking by the forwards, to go
along with a strong defence to power Clinton
to a 3-1 victory.
In the first period Walkerton's Dan Teeple
opened the scoring at 3:49 as his shot clearly
beat Hoggarth. But, before the period had
ended Danny Wildfong scored at 6:33 to pull
Clinton into a 1-1 tie. ° Chris Kennedy and
Mark Livermore gathered the assists on the
goal.
There was only one goal in the second
period which belonged to Shaun Chipchase
at 2:48. The goal carne when Danny
Wildfong intercepted a pass at centre. After
taking a feyv strides he fed a nice pass to
Chipchase who was able to beat the last
defender before shooting a hard wrist shot
into the top right hand corner. Chipchase,
with his 92nd goal of the season, rounded out
the Clinton scoring in the third period at

7:05. At the conclusion of the game Danny
Wildfong was voted Clinton's Most Valuable
Player of the game.
Clinton 5 - Hanover 2
After hustling back from just winning the
Grand Championship Game at Durham a
tired, but pumped up Clinton Atom team
took on the Hanover Barons in the Cham-
pionship Game. To top if off, Clinton arrived
back at Mildmay 30 minutes late with their
equipment still on;:irlirius.their" skatca.;Just,
knowing ,that a win would give them another
Championship the Clinton boys gave it all
they had.
In the first period Clinton grabbed a 2-0
lead on goals by Shaun Chipchase. The first
Chipchase goal was a picture play as Scott
Jewitt and Jason Carter passed the puck
around, ' then found Chipchase all alone for
an easy tip -in goal at 3:34. At 8:51 again it
was Chipchase as he and Jason Carter went
in alone on a two man breakaway. Carter,
deked the goalie to one side and again Chip -
chase scored theeasy goal.
In the second period Hanover made a
game out of it as they scored at 2:24 but
Shaun Chipchase's third goal of the game
came five minutes later -restored Clinton's
two -goal lead.
Hanover quickly narrowed the score to 3-2
at 7:50 but once again just before the second
period ended Scott Jewitt gave Clinton
another two -goal cushion at 8:29. Jason
Carter and Chipchase both assisting on the
goal.
In the third period Clinton could sense vic-
tory as Shaun Chipchase on a nifty pass
from Scott Jewitt scored his fourth goal of
the game and an unbelievable 104th goal for
the'seiaddn gat' 1" 18.11aii6Vel" did a82'
but it was too little too late as Clinton cap-
tured the "B" championship of the Mildmay
Tournament.
After the game Scott "Jewitt received the
M.V.P.' award for that game. Also, Shaun
Chipchase Clinton's super centre Who
played fantastic all year, received the Most
Valuable Player Award for the entire
tournament.
During.the closing of the tournament, the
Clinton team was also presented with the
big championship trophy. Captain Scott
Jewitt and co -captains Jason Carter and
Shaun Chipchase accepted the champion-
ship trophy on behalf of the team. After the
presentation the team skated around the ice
in victory as they held the trophy high.
